Having just acquired an R Reg 2.3ltr Ghia X in March, I needed to sort out the Climate Control. The previous owner had had the fault diagnosed by Ford as an evaporator problem, which obviously would cost a considerable sum to fix thru' a Ford main dealer. We managed to source the part and had a mechanic fit it and all seemed fine.

Now two weeks after the return of the vehicle the same fault has cropped up; the mechanic has said that the evaporator is covered under warranty (but not the cost of fitting it). However, he has warned that the fault must lie elsewhere in the system and that the evaporator is failing as it is the weekest link in the chain; it could need the condensor or other part replacing?

Has anyone else experienced or heard of this problem before, and if so what could it be or how can it be diagnosed.

Hi,

You don't mention what fails on the evaporater, is it a leak, blockage.

It may be the expansion device or if the system is contaminated it could be blocking up the system.

Sounds like the system needs looking at by a specialist.

Thanks for the reply. According to the mechanic who swapped out the evaporator, the unit actually ruptured, the first unit had a large split which obviously resulted in the fluid leaking out.

I think you are right, a specialist needs to look into the system, but before then I have asked my guy to replace the evaporator under its warranty, but not gas it up.

Again, thanks for your input.

Its most unusual for the evaporater piping to rupture. Most likely cause I think is defective materials used to make the evaporater. or bad assembly like scoared Copper tubes or over pressure when making bends.

One other reason is extreme internal pressure causing the tubes to rupture, can't think of a way such a high pressure can be possible inside the evaporater as the evaporater is part of the low pressure side of the system.

Your mechanic needs to measure and monitor the suction and disharge pressures of the system at the compressor service vales.

Good luck, I would be interested to know what the cause is when you have it fixed corectly,

reefer.
