the only thing that put me off a 2.3 was the amount of fuel i'd have to put in it compared to a diesel, but then diesels are usually a bit more expensive to maintain, or so i've been led to believe, having only owned one for a few months this hasn't become apparent yet.

The usual "crimes" - check aircon is working properly and that all electrical items work, check scuttle drains are not blocked

2.3 at least has chaindrive camshaft, so no belt to change every 40,000 miles

We've had our 2.3 for two months and are very pleased with it, the engine is responsive and pretty smooth for a big four cylinder (does it have a balancer shaft ?). Having had a diesel Citroen Xantia for four years I was a convert, but this 2.3 was such a good deal I was swayed back. I don't miss the turbo-lag and narrow rev band of a diesel, which can make overtaking difficult, nor the smell and rattle in the moring. A recent trip to cornwall leaving at 4am gave 33.5mpg according to the computer while averaging 70mph over 365 miles. Our overall avarage is 30.45mpg (checked manually) over 3000 miles, but we live in the country and I doubt many 2.3s do as well as this.

As Ivor says check all electrics and especially the Aircon to ensure it works.

A couple of other factors in the Petrol/Diesel cost benefit analysis;

The Diesel is one insurance group higher than a Petrol.

My diesel needed glow-pulgs at four years old at a cost of nearly

I had a 2002 model 2.3 before my current galaxy.

This was my first mpv and bought a used model in zetec trim not really knowing what to expect - I thought that if I didn't like it, I could sell it on and go back to a saloon or an estate.

I was so impressed with the vehicle that I decided that I would trade up for a ghia with all the bells and whistles - hence my V6.

I found that the 2.3 wasn't too bad on fuel, the engine was smooth and responsive-despite the size of the vehicle, the ride was very comfortable and supple but there was some body roll, there were no squeaks or rattles either.

I did have a few problems but they have probably been covered above.

In contrast my V6 is thirsty, less forgiving on the ride, rattles and squeaks on occasion, the leather seats are not as comfortable as the cloth in the zetec .

-still glad I bought it though.

Moral of the story is that the 2.3 was a great ambassador for the galaxy (well in my case).

Go for it!!

I have just purchased a 98 s 2.3 ghia x and yes its walking/talking and i am very impressed apart from 1 thing my CD multi changer is slighty US as in take a CD from dics 1 and returns it to slot 2 then jams and the only way to release the disc is to take it out, strip it down and release disc(by now after 15 times it can be done quicker than F1 wheel changes) and some dics end up US.

Is there anyone who wants to sell a good one at a reasonably price so i can play my ABBA/R E M discs

Regards

MIKIE

Consider depreciation costs before you buy. If you intend to keep the car until it is ready to be scrapped, then depreciation doesn't matter. If you wish to sell on in 2 years, then do the sums. The diesel depreciates a lot less than the petrol model. (especially here in Ireland where anything over a 2 litre is highly taxed and therefore depreciate v quickly)

Yes it has two balancer shafts mounted below the crank shaft, these are mounted in a ladder frame that is machined and pre-tensioned to simulate assembly to the engine block B) they run at twice the crank shaft speed! driven by a chain off the crank shaft, the drive gears are matched cast iron and are rubber coated in order to reduce noise, the lobes on the shafts have plastic caps bolted onto them to lower the aeration rate of the oil as they pass though it

the target was to reduce the noise level of the engine by 2dB the actual amount was up to 6dB at the close of developement :D

so thats why its a smooth and quite engine :D
