Hi Guys.

I've just changed my '51' 2.3 Gal for a Ford Direct '53' 130 diesel Ghia with 7,500 on the clock, collected it yesterday, seems to have been a good deal, BUT...

... when got it home, raised the bonnet, as you do, and discovered quite a bit of oil spray in there. Found that the well around the engine oil filler cap was full of oil which was source of the 'spray', cleaned it up and assumed an over enthusiastic service man had missed the hole and not bothered to clean it up himself. But after having been for a run to test it, found oil was weeping from under the filler cap again so fault there somewhere. Anyone come across this? Is it serious or maybe just a faulty seal in the filler cap so cap needs replacing?

Also, the engine seems to be covered by a plastic shield, has Ford badge, TDI lettering and false exhaust picture on it. I thought it would be a good idea to remove this to look at the engine, etc. underneath, to see if that is covered in oil, but couldn't remove it although it obviously must come off for maintenance. I can wobble it about but there must be clips somewhere holding it and I don't want to risk breaking them by brute force if they are screwed in. Someone must know how it comes off? I would look on the TIS disc but always find this very unfriendly and difficult to navigate around. Also, when this cover does come off, do I need to remove the dip stick first??

Thanks for any help.

PS. Had vehicle from dealer 20 miles away so thought a bit of advanced knowledge might be useful b4 getting back to him!

Hi,

I got my 53 Galaxy diesel from Ford Direct too but no oil spray under the bonnet I'm afraid.

Not too certain on how to remove the engine cover. I know the dipstick must be removed and I think the cover just pulls off.

Remember with Ford Direct you can return your car for another without any questions so long as you've covered no more than 1000miles and no more than 30 days since you took delivery.

Have you checked the oil level? it could be over filled! not unheard of :D or as you say it could be oil spillage build up around the filler cap area?

the engine cover is held in place by prongs that push into grommets on the engine, the cover simply pulls off! IIRC the dip stick has to be removed, stash it somewhere safe! where you wont stand on it! not on the floor :D hey SA :D

Thanks for advice so far. As I've only had the vehicle for a day so far thought I had better give it a chance b4 I invoke the 30 day thing.

Oil level is ok, first thing I checked, where are the grommets? Straight through or in sideways, and where located?

Not sure on the location of the fixings but it does lift off I know on the early models the cover was bolted on, the nuts where hidden under blanking caps in the engine cover

Come on, one of you TDI drivers must have an idea of how to remove the engine cover? or are you all sitting at your desks working out your MPG figures for the past week! :D

It is very easy to remove.

After removing the dipstick, the cover just clips on and it is very easy to pull off. I seem to rember there are are a couple of clip on grommets at the front and the rear part slides into a fitting.

Hope that doesn't sound too confusing

Thanks Dave + others. Decided to return to dealer for advice and to sort. The engine cover, as you say, is on 2 lugs at the front and a clip at the back.. so to remove, lift up at the front until clear, then just pull forward out of back clip. Didn't just want to use brute force in the wrong direction!

As to the oil in the well around filler cap... they replaced cap with a new one. Apparently, oil filler caps that do not seal properly are not uncommon on (diesel?) Gals.
