Guest nelse Posted August 13, 2004 Report Posted August 13, 2004 Ever since having my galaxy i've noticed the fact that when i put fuel in the gauge always goes up by more then i was expecting, by about 1/8 of a tank mark to be more precise, and then drops back to the level i would have expected it to indicate over the next 3 or 4 miles of motoring. Now i put this down to some quirk in the system. However a new quirk has reared it's head. Now I don't usually run my cars with less than 1/4 tank of fuel so have only noticed this recently on the odd occasion i've gone below a 1/4, but the gauge seems to stick on or just above 1/4 tank for ages, i usually cover around 60-80 miles but have done as much as 100 miles without it moving, then it will suddenly drop by an 1/8 division on the dial. It does this if the miles are part of one journey or lots of shorter ones. The gauge always zero's when the ignition is turned off, but goes back up to 1/4 next time the car is used. It also does a simlar thing around 1/2 tank, but it tends not to move for about 30- 40 miles then drop by about 1/2 of a division on the dial. i only noticed this when the 1/4 tank quirk reared it's head, otherwise the fuel gauge tends to move downwards fairly evenly during journeys or everyday use. Oh there was one occasion when it stayed on a 1/4 tank for about 150 miles, then got in it one day and the fuel light cam on. While i understand the fuel gauge readings are only a guide, I suspect i may have a fault somewhere at the tank end of the system. But i just want to know if this is experienced by anyone else and is just a comman quirk amongst galaxy's, or if others have experienced similar and if it's been due to a fault. I've never had another car do this and if it's a problem, while not overworrying i'd rather get sorted now rather than wait for any fault to get worse and render the fuel gauge useless. Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted August 13, 2004 Report Posted August 13, 2004 There is a known problem with some instrument assemblies. IIRC nobody has actually posted to say that there is a fix for it. We did have some members say that there was no point in changing the clocks (and Ford stopped doing it) because there was a risk that the new replacement would do the same. Best to check with your dealer. Quote
Guest fredt Posted August 13, 2004 Report Posted August 13, 2004 I think there is nothing wrong with nelse's fuel gauge! I think it its a very suttle way for a TDI driver to boast about his MPG figures :D i usually cover around 60-80 miles but have done as much as 100 miles without it moving................... Oh there was one occasion when it stayed on a 1/4 tank for about 150 miles.......... see :D TDI drivers! never happy unless they can drop their MPG figures into the conversation :D Quote
Guest nelse Posted August 14, 2004 Report Posted August 14, 2004 To be honest my MPG figures are not that impressive but that's something else, partly to do with the type of driving i mainly do. My feeling is if it's a problem it is with the fuel level sensor. I did have one instance of putting 30 litres of fuel in and the when the ignition was turned on the gauge only moved back to it's pre fill up position, over about 25 minutes it gradually crept up to where i expected it should have been.
