Hi,

When joining the motorway today there was a loss of power and car couldn't achive more than 50MPH uphill (fully loaded) the revs were over 3000  .

Drove the car back home (limp home mode :o ) let it stand for an hour and disconnected the MAF sensor.

Took the car for a spin (2 mile) and it seemed back to its usual self (couldn't take it over 40 mph as the roads don't allow it).

Then reconnected the MAF and drove it back seemed like its usual self.

Can anyone help with the following questions?

1. Is the sudden loss of power in new shape TDi (115) commonly down to the MAF.

2. How long can the car be driven if need be with the MAF disconnected -and will this affect performance, emmisions or damage the engine.

3. Can MAF be sensors be cleaned or reconditioned as a DIY job.

Thanks in advance

Loss of power is often down to the MAF sensor playing up or failing. ISTR that no long-term damage will be caused by leaving it disconnected but it may fail emissions check meaning that technically you are breaking the law and liable to a fine. It is not possible to clean or repair the unit itself. New MAFs are available from GSF, VAGParts and others as well as main dealers

It is not necessary to buy the whole unit complete with mounting portion of the intake trunking, just the sensor is all that is usually required, and it is a simple 5-minute job to change it.

I had exactly the same problem. Accelerating hard down the slip road onto a dual carriageway, the power disappeared at about 60mph and struggled to maintain this speed. I pulled off at the next junction, switched off ignition and restarted. Problem cleared and has never returned.

..so could be an electronics glitch in the ECU, or a bit of dirt on the MAF that got burnt off when engine was switched off (see recent comments ref MAF wore heated to several hunder degrees C for a few seconds after engine switched off).

Fingers crossed that you get away with a zero-cost fix.....
