Noise From Engine?

hi all,

 

I have a noise coming from my car. It used to just happen when it was cold, but now it happens every time i start the car.

 

It is a whirring electrical motor noise. It appears to be coming from a round plastic housing mounted to the LHS of the battery. It has a hose going in to the centre of it. It has the name " PEIRBURG" on the housing.

 

The noise lasts for approx 30 seconds after driving off.

 

Any ideas what this piece of engine is? :blink:

 

Also, just had car serviced and was told master cylinder is leaking, brake pedal travel is quite far and car is hard to stop, can this be repaired or does it have to be replaced. Had a quote of

without knowing what engine you have I would hazard a guess its the secondary air pump? its purpose is to inject air into the exhaust gases in order to create an after burner effect and shorten the cats heat up time

its a 1996 N 2.0L.

 

Why would this start up when the engine is warm?

 

It only ever used to come on when the temperature was low, ie cold days??

 

I can see fluid leaking from where the brake pedal pashes in a plunger in the footwell, i dont know where else to look as im not very car minded.

From what I can gather it should come everytime the car is started, unless its really hot! or the cat is up to full operating temp, short start stop journey's wont bring the cat up to temp so it will cut in when you start the engine to boost the warming up of the cat

 

if your getting brake fluid into the cabin area via the brake pedal linkage then its not good! it may be worth your while checking the condition of the paint work around the back of the engine bay below the brake servo to check its not been damaged by the brake fluid! not only that, if it's getting into the cabin it could damage the carpets! get that stuff on your shoes and walk it into your MIL's front room! then see how much she really thinks of you! :o

Leaking brake fluid should be sorted at once. Probably best to replace with new and at
