Been covered before and IIRC it was decided its possible but the work involved would be to much!

why do you want to fit a 5000 unit into a MK1? if it's because you want a CD changer and your standard head unit isnt CD changer compatable? then replace it with an after market job that is, there are loads available depending on how much you want to spend!

I just fitted an aftermarket Blaupunkt on my MK1. The plugs are all ISO standard so it just went straight in. The CD changer fits perfectly in the stowage area under the driver seat (saves the rear whl-arch box for the emergency gear) and the lead tucks under the sill trim - very neat. 15min job tops. When I get some round tuits, I'll sort out the aerial power doobry.
