I'm not sore about the gal, but most auto's have an ignition inhibit switch to prevent starting when in gear.

Sounds like it's a bit touchy.

Occasionally nothing happens when I turn the ignition key. After jiggling the auto gear lever, engine turns over and starts. Can anyone please advise?

dipso, you don't say what year your car is but I had this problem on my T reg auto and the cure was to adjust the inhibitor sensor- i think it is an optical sensor rather than a switch.

If you remove the cowling over the gear selector you will see a small screw sealed with an orange thread sealing compound. Careful adjustment- one or two turns was all it took on mine.
