Guest Barrye Posted April 29, 2003 Report Posted April 29, 2003 I have a 98 Tdi110 with 70k on the clock and get a strange knocking noise when the engine is cold. It can only be heard on the overrun ( engine drowns it out otherwise) and is only noticible on rough roads. The general impression I have is that something is loose. It is difficult to say exactly where it is coming from, but it is definitely not in the cabin. I initially tought it was a suspension bush, but it stops within 2 or 3 minutes as the engine starts to warm up. I am suspicious that the Cat matrix has come loose and as it warms up it expands and stops knocking - anybody got any ideas? Thanks Barry Quote
Mussey1 Posted April 29, 2003 Report Posted April 29, 2003 Is the noise only apparent when driving? Mine makes a clicking noise almost like a worn cv joint when starting off with the wheels turned from cold, again this disappears after a few minutes. Could it be the rear heater? Mussey1 Quote
Guest Barrye Posted April 29, 2003 Report Posted April 29, 2003 Generally only apparant when going over bumpy roads. It's quite a heavy noise, not like a CV joint. Thanks anyway. Barry Quote
Guest nigel_dermott Posted April 30, 2003 Report Posted April 30, 2003 Barry I have recently become the owner of a galaxy and had a similar noise that I found was comimg from a lose radiator. You wil find a stainless pipe come out of the top which if you get hold of it and pull it up and down you will soon find out whether its the same fault. follow the stainless pipe to the right and you will find a plastic type washer/connector that will need either tightening or replacing. Guest VW Infiltrator Posted May 1, 2003 Report Posted May 1, 2003 Our Sharan has a knocking noise when cold; i've found that the exhaust mount to the rear of the cat has pulled away at the welds on the exhaust. Curiously the noise stops once the car is warm. I'll fix the bracket firsts and see if the noise disapears. Richard Quote
