CWatters Posted February 11, 2018 Report Posted February 11, 2018 The belt that drives the alternator on my 1.9TDi came off late last night just as I arrived home. Can someone tell me what else is on this belt? I know the power steering pump is on there as I lost that. Is the water pump also on that belt? I'm about 3 miles from my local garage. If I set off with the engine cold do you think I'll make it or is it going to overheat on me in first 100 yards? I suspect something seized like the air co pump as the belt was burnt. Quote
sparky Paul Posted February 11, 2018 Report Posted February 11, 2018 Pretty sure the water pump is on the cambelt on the diesels. Could be a bearing collapsed in anything on the belt, but it should be easy enough to identify what's seized or seizing with the belt off. Pay particular attention to any tensioner/idler pulleys as they can fail quite spectacularly. Quote
CWatters Posted February 11, 2018 Author Report Posted February 11, 2018 Hummm.. The alternator turns freely. What I think is the air co pump (but could be power steering?) can just about be turned by hand/stiff.The tensioner pulley rotates freely but appears to have prickly bit of rubber stuck to it? Can't reach further down from the top and the hail is going past horizontally so getting under the car will have to wait. Quote
BrianH Posted February 11, 2018 Report Posted February 11, 2018 If it matches this photo > https://www.fordmpv.com/smf2/ford-galaxy-common-faults-and-problems/galaxy-auxiliary-drive-belt-routing-(mk2-tdi)/ Then no the water pump isn't driven off it. That should also tell you what each pulley is provided its the right one for your engine (never looked at the diesels to tell you). The petrol water pump (or at least the 2.0 one) is driven off that belt, as I lost that at the same time as the alternator when the idler pulley decided it had had enough on the way back from an MOT. Might be worth taking the pulley off to see if there is damage to it, if you have something else seized then it may just be bits of burnt belt that have got stuck to it and might clean off? Did the Air con actually work prior to this? Quote
sparky Paul Posted February 12, 2018 Report Posted February 12, 2018 I'm guessing yours is a mk2 PD engine, as you only mentioned the one belt - the pic Brian linked to is perfect. AFAIK mk1 diesels have two aux belts, and the water pump is driven off one of them. If the tensioner doesn't feel rough when rotated and there is no play in the bearing, it's probably ok. Air con pulley should spin freely without engine running, as the clutch should be disengaged. You can tell the aircon pump as it has a fat pulley with a clutch integrated into it. There is a stationary plate on the outside of the pulley, with some gubbins behind it. The power steering pump should have a plain pulley bolted on with three studs, and will offer some resistance. The aircon pump clutches do fail, but the pump would also have to be seized to throw the belt off. PS pumps can and do seize when the internals fail. Quote
CWatters Posted February 13, 2018 Author Report Posted February 13, 2018 Thanks for the great photo. Looks like a match. Air co pump is definitely hard to turn by hand so looks like that. Was replaced just over a year ago so probably just out of warranty. Will get it booked in and drive it over carefully. Quote
