Guest welshcakes Posted August 1, 2004 Report Posted August 1, 2004 sorry its a 2ltr petrol N reg galaxy welshcakes Quote
ridway Posted August 1, 2004 Report Posted August 1, 2004 I think it may be a chain on the petrol rather than a belt. Thats the 2.3 and not the 2.0 so Im not 100% so get a second opinion first Rich Quote
Guest Porker Posted August 2, 2004 Report Posted August 2, 2004 I assume that we are talking about the aux drivebelt, not the timing chain. Jack up front of vehicle. Remove undertray. Rotate the tensioner clockwise(between crankshaft and water pump.) Needs a spanner on the centre nut. You should be able to release the belt with pressure on the tensioner. If you want to refit the same belt, note the direction it was fitted to get it the same. Refitting is the reverse as they say. Quote
Ketchup Posted August 14, 2004 Report Posted August 14, 2004 took my Galaxy to the local mechanic (good bloke and fair priced) for a service - asked him how much to change the drive belt?? said the 2.3 Petrol (98 in my case) has chain and doesnt need replacing- is this right? Quote
Guest fredt Posted August 14, 2004 Report Posted August 14, 2004 The cam gear is chain driven, every thing else, the air con compressor, power steering pump, water pump and alternator are drive off the crank shaft pully via an aux drive belt which needs changing about 10k miles Quote
Guest docker Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 fredt, does this mean mines a chain also ??? '96 v6 auto thanx - PHIL :o Quote
Guest fredt Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 yep, the V6 has a chain, infact it has two chains  I'm not sure exactly on what the life expectancy of the chains are? i read elswhere that they should be changed around 100/120kto be on the safe side I believe the most common failure is the tensioner which in turns allows the chains to skip a tooth or two which can lead to valve and piston contact! mines going in to be done in the next couple of months, while its there the clutch is going to be replaced while the gearbox is out bent valves from A vr6 :o http://bellsouthpwp.net/a/r/aritman/images/dcp_1229_small.jpg http://bellsouthpwp.net/a/r/aritman/images/DCP_1223_small.jpg Quote
Guest Boggler Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 Quickie question for Fredt, mate I work with has a 1.8 Sharan, is this belt or chain? and, if necessary, when would it need changing. My own Gal is on 120k and I'm booked for a second change of belt on Friday. Quote
Guest fredt Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 IIRC the 1.8 20V Turbo has a cam belt, no idea on when or how often it needs changing though  will ask my mate who has one when I see him next Quote
