Gents, Can you please help me with the Airbag light on. I checked the error with a LAUNCH diagnostics tool. I got the following;

00588 Airbag igniter,Driver side(N95)

00532 Supply voltage B+ (Short to ground)

After clearing error I only get the first error now 00588.

If I turn the steering wheel to a different position, i can sometimes clear the error but on moving the steering wheel, the error comes back and light comes on.

Would you concur it is the Airbag clock spring/slip ring ?

I have seen on eBay a number of these second hand for about £15, I was gonna get one and try it out. However there are so many and fit so many vehicles. Most have the part no.1J0959653 followed by B or C or D or E.

My question is, are they all the same with the letter indicating a later and thus newer model, or do I have to go with an exact part number ? Buying a later version would mean less used version I suppose?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Yes I'd agree its the clock spring (its the bit that flexes back and forth every time the wheel turns, so your test does point to that part being at fault.)

I think the letter at the end just refers to the revision - if you look at this link > https://www.bestpartstore.co.uk/7023508-swag-clockspring-airbag they all appear to be interchangeable. Later may be better, though no guarantee it isn't off a car thats had life as a taxi etc. I don't have anything handy to decode the VAG type numbers to confirm this though.

If yours has steering wheel controls for the stereo it may require a different spring, the best idea would be to get a look at the current part to confirm. Microcat shows 4 different part numbers for the MK2 Galaxy depending on what kind of traction control is fitted, stereo controls etc and model year. You don't mention which you have, but I'd suspect its a MK2 of some kind.

Ok. So update. I finally got round to opening up the steering wheel. The new clock spring I bought was the wrong one for this vehicle. £30. I must have a MK1 car.. (2000 plate). On removing the clock spring, it has tracks on the bottom side for the horn and non detachable wires on either side of the clock spring for the airbag.

I've done a continuity test on the clock spring AFTER REMOVING the AIRBAG and it tests ok. So now I am really confused. It looks ok. But this is odd because before I was able to clear the fault, move the steering wheel and error would come back. But the spring wire tests ok..

The clock spring has Ford and VW logo on it.

Part no. 7M0959653

And 95VW14A664AA

It's £120 from dealer and there are only two left in the country.

I don't know what to do especially as it test ok, but the steering wheel movement test suggests it is the clock spring..

How often can the fault be the airbag itself. I can't test it (NEVER apply any test voltage from meter to airbag. It will explode and kill you..!!)

Any suggestions people..

Thanks..

I'm not convinced you will even see this as this forum is very broken, but if you do, then a suitable resistor bridging the clock sping output would prove if the clockspring is the culprit. It should switch the light off once you reset the code with vcds and stay off. People have been known to "fix" this fault that way before, not sure offhand what resistance is needed.

The clock springs are different depending on spec level - buttons on the wheel.

Bear in mind its checking for the correct resistance - and given your moving the wheel and it goes off, that would say its the clockspring as thats the only bit that really does any movement (every time you twist the wheel of course).

Only way you can rule the airbag out other than that, is to swap the bag. I had one upto about a year ago from the mk1 I scrapped (one of the bits that never sold). Unfortunatly you can't send them to anyone as noone will deliver them. It ended up left outside (its still there actually) but its probabbly useless by now.

If you are struggling still and can't get an answer here, try www.fordmpv.com as most folk from here are over there now.

Thanks Brian.

How broken is this forum? We can still post and check posts ? This forum is full of good info..

I have a new clockspring on order and concur it must be this at fault. Even though it tests ok.

I will see what resistance the the new and old one are and report back..

Thank you..

Its very broken - the fact you tried to get that to post 3 times before it went through sadly shows how broken it is. If you also look on the main page, a reply to a post doesn't bring the post to the top anymore, so you can only see a new post from the main screen and only if its the most recent new post as well.

Unless its just me? But you must have noticed the new posts here by now are few and far between.

Yes theres loads of useful info here, and it would be a shame to lose it, but its getting harder to actually find it now.

No, it's not just you Brian

Most of the activity is on the other place now, it would be good if a way to archive all the information on here could be found.
