There seems to be a lot of confusion for the correct oil for the VW 115PD engine. I have a Seat and the owners manual (and Seat techcnical dept.) specify 505 01 (10k interval) or 506 01 (computer based interval).

Checking with Castrol, the 506 01 is fully synt and really expensive. They do not have 505 01, just 505 00 which is mineral only. The data sheet for the Castrol 506 01 states not it should not be mixed with 505 01!

They reckon that their Magnatec for advanced diesels (semi-syth) might do.

Anyone have any clarification on this and does anyone know a regular 505 01 oil that can be bought off the shelf?

e-mail from Castrol received earlier this week:

Ivor, at last a customer clued up on VW 505.01 spec! This is only available either through your VW dealer or through one of our distributors Castrol Classic Oils on 01954 231668. They offer a mail order service.

Regards

John

DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO USE NON-505.01 spec oil - Millers do an oil to 505.01 which I supplied to the garage that did my recent service. DO NOT USE 506.01 in an early PD 115 engine - check that it has been built to take the 506.01 spec - and don't use it unless you are going onto variable servicing anyway - unless you don't mind the extra cost.

There have been lots of previous threads on this. Millers do indeed do a 505.01 oil, the XFE-PD 5W40, but probably the easiest and possibly the cheapest to obtain is the Ford 505.01 product specified in the Galaxy owners' manual, called Ford SD 5W40, available from the parts dept. of the larger Ford dealers.

I use nothing but VW Quantum PD oil in my 115HP Tdi. Expensive but the right stuff. Can get it a bit cheaper from German, French & swedish parts Co.

Anyone know an alternate source for parking sensors, i have a faulty rear sensor but Ford want

Should've asked GSF while you were getting your oil....bound to be the same as

the Sharan (but worth checking) if it is also try

www.eurocarparts.co.uk

www.vagparts.com

If you get vagparts phone number off the site speak to Martyn (he'll probably

be able to tell you if they are the same part) but he is a REALLY helpful bloke

which seems a rarity in this day and age !!!!

eurocarparts have more genuine parts at discounted rates than GSF

Good luck

I have not come across Millers here in Ireland. It looks like I will be forced to used the Quantum stuff. Seat themselves have used Castrol RX - the bottom of the range mineral oil!!!!

How early is early? Mine is a a June 2001 model. I have the computer for servicing but I hear that it often reckommends a service close to 10k anyway.

Castrol DO provide a 505.01 oil. It's called CATROL 505.01 strangely enough.

As per previous threads, Ford dealers are now starting to use this during servicing rather than the Ford branded stuff.

June 2001 is too early for the engine to have the mods to take 506.01. Phone the Castrol helpline or VW UK to get the exact details - have your engine serial number to hand.

Cheers - I have emailed Castrol and await their reply. I don't understand why 506.01 would not be suitable for the older engine - other than overkill? Surely it is a better oil being fully synt, etc...

There is a good technical reason that they gave me - cannot remember what it is so you will have to wait for their reply!

I've got a special wooden keyboard that doubles up as a time-shifter
