Hi, just purchased a galaxy mk 2 2003 model and the remote key not working. Long story short, the chips missing. Am i dooomed or can this be sorted by an auto electrician or a nasty visit to the local ford dealer. ?

Thanks for any help.

I assume you mean the small PATS chip for the immobiliser is lost, and the car will not start. If that's the case, you need a good auto locksmith, or someone who has access to Fords IDS diagnostic tool to program a new PATS chip into the system. The actual chip is not expensive, but needs to be programmed into the PATS on the car.

Original post is a bit vague - remote key not working as a remote, or won't start the car?

If its the later then what Paul has already said, if its not working as a remote could be a few things - Can be down to it needing syncing, or could be that someone has sent it through the washing machine and you need to replace the remote....

I was just going on the "chips missing" bit Brian.

I missed that bit, though i'd still say they need to confirm which bit they have the issue with. And the OP probabbly has more chance of getting a auto locksmith to get it sorted than Ford dealer as you suggest either way, I doubt anyone in the dealership would know how its done anymore on a car of that age. The last time i went in the one here they suggested trying the VW dealer (who to be fair was better - cheaper, and able to lookup without needing a VW reg or VIN)

I know an auto locksmith who can do you a remote fob or a new key with a chip. If the chip was missing it wouldn't start the car as mentioned above.

if it does start the car, then i must assume the chip has been glued to the ignition somewhere underneath??

Thanks for the replies and sorry to be vague in my original question. The remote key will not open doors remotely but will open drivers door manually and does not start the car. The chip is missing in the remote key. Am I right in thinking the central locking switch on the drivers door locks all doors ? When I press/activate the switch, only the drivers door is locking. Previous owner had problems with the wires breaking in the A pillar to door.

The drivers door should lock all doors yes, broken wires possible, if its been repaired in the wrong way (joints made inside the gaiter area) then they will keep breaking, the solution is to try and get any joints away from the bit of the loom that doesn't get bent.

The chip (either missing or not programmed) should be able to be sorted by an auto locksmith. Not sure if it can be sorted by VCDS?

No, chip programming can't be done with VCDS or VAG-COM, PATS is a Ford system so the VW software won't work, you need the Ford IDS diagnostic tool.

The manual central locking issues will almost certainly be wiring related, probably driver's door or tailgate. There is a post about remote locking key programming in the FAQ section.

Bear in mind that the remote locking and PATS immobiliser are two completely separate systems on the car.
