Guest Titan Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 Hello one and all!, I currently own a 1.9 tdi zetec on an X plate (2000), there are 16k miles on the clock which is low 4 yrs old!. The problem I have with the car at the moment is that on going up any hill over 40 mph!!, i.e in 4-6th gear the engine really struggles and requires me to come down the gears!, I've tried all different rev ranges and the same thing seems to occur!, I'll be doing 70mph in 5th gear and go up a gradual incline on the motorway and the speed drops right down!!, is this normal or is there a problem with my Galaxy?. Any advice would be helpful! TVMIATitan Quote
Guest Porker Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 First (and most likely) thing to look at is your MAF sensor. This is discussed at great length on this forum. Located in the pipe from the airbox. Disconnect the electrical connector and test drive. If the same then replace. Common diesel fault. Search for MAF on this section for more info and pics. Quote
Guest chrisH Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 Could also be one of the vacuum hoses leaking or the EGR blocked. I had the same problem, checked MAF, seemed ok so left it alone for a while, then I got hold of VAG-COM and this showed up an error code with the EGR ( i think thats what it was, its posted on here somewhere if your interested ) anyway took the thing apart etc and goes like stink. Good luck with your quest....... Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 16,000 miles in 4 years won't have done the engine or its systems any good - time for a nice long journey to "blow the cobwebs" out of it too. Could be MAF or EGR related - get them checked out first, then drive around for a day or two  Quote
Guest Titan Posted July 30, 2004 Report Posted July 30, 2004 Ok searched through the topics and found a lot of people have had the same problems and it has been down to the MAF sensor!, although I'm sure there on the sight somewhere but, are there any pictures to show how to disable or unplug the MAF sensor!, and on doing this will this effect engine wear?, I guess you must plug back in after the check or are you able to run for some time without the MAF sensor plugged in?. When I got the car it only had 10324 miles on the clock and I only bought it back in November, I have done around 6k in 8 months and there have been some good 500mile round trips since, so thought that would have ran in the car and blown any cobwebs. Are you able to just clean your MAF sensor or do you just replace it? TVMIATitan Quote
Guest JohnP Posted August 2, 2004 Report Posted August 2, 2004 Hope this helps...I bought mine about 12 months ago and wasn't happy about engine power. Like you describe - 70 in 5th fine but not enough ummph to join the dual carriageway at a safe speed. I hadn't owned a Galaxy before and as mine's the 87bhp version - I just put it down to being a heavy car. When I discovered this site, and found out that I wasn't alone with this problem, I unplugged the MAF sensor. It's quite obvious - on top of the air pipe. Then I found that the previous servicer hadn't plugged it in properly. The plug shell was inserted and obviously stuck at some point. They had 'held' it in place with a tie-wrap. Simply using a bit more care, I inserted the connector another 1/4in and I have a new car!I have subsequently found out that with this sensor disconnected, the engine management system selects a 'get you home' mode which does just that. I did nearly 15k miles in this mode with no apparent after effects. My lesson - check the obvious first!John Quote
ridway Posted August 2, 2004 Report Posted August 2, 2004 John, 15K to get home! Only NASA can compete with that  Did it affect your fuel consumption much either way? Rich Quote
Guest JohnP Posted August 2, 2004 Report Posted August 2, 2004 Rich,I am amazed that the car ran on emergency mode for so long! However, on a more worrying note, nothing in the car told me that I had a fault - I've no doubt that Ford would have charged me for a new sensor if I had been brave enough to ask....I've only fixed it for a couple of tankfuls, so no accurate mpg figures yet - but unfortunately, because I now travel a little faster than before - accelerate rather than drift up to speed - I think that my mpg is about the same. Before the fix, I was getting around 600 miles to the tank - if your interested then I'll post the figures when I've transferred then from the log which lives in the car...No obvious shift either way in mpg but the car now feels safe to drive!RegardsJohn Quote
Guest JohnP Posted August 3, 2004 Report Posted August 3, 2004 And here's the rub:Averaged 40mpg before fixing the problem and after fixing - well, 40mpg!So don't expect any great fuel saving.... Quote
ridway Posted August 10, 2004 Report Posted August 10, 2004 Well well, I suppose you're happier in the knowledge that it now works ok and you're less likley to get shunted in the back end. Intresting outcome though. Rich Quote
