Badbaron Posted February 18, 2017 Report Posted February 18, 2017 Hi everyone. I am new to the site and am after some info. Recently been having starting problems with my y reg 2.3 petrol galaxy. Starter has packed up think it is solenoid. A friend of mine said he hadidn't a couple spare. However when I took mine to compare the depth of the housing and shaft were different. Does anybody know how many different types of starter there are for a y reg 2.3 petrol. Thank you in advance Quote
sparky Paul Posted February 18, 2017 Report Posted February 18, 2017 I think there are only the two types for 2.3 petrol. AFAIK, short casting with 9 tooth gear is for auto gearbox, long with 10 tooth is for manual. Quote
Badbaron Posted February 18, 2017 Author Report Posted February 18, 2017 Thank you for that Paul. I will have a count of the teeth in the morning. Quote

Badbaron Posted February 21, 2017 Author Report Posted February 21, 2017 Thank you for that but I have found the starter may not be the problem. Basically my wife would use the car get to a destination stop turn car off. Now if she returned to the car not long after being run and try starting the car would turn over but would make a strange rattling noise. After leaving it to cool down the car would start no problem and no rattling noise.recently the car has been stood for a few weeks and went out to start it the other day and the car would turn over but make this strange rattling noise. Noticed that when turning engine off the starter would make a whining noise while disengaging so toon starter of tested and cleaned all of the leads up. Put it back on yesterday and fired straight up no problem. Tried it again later that night started fine. Wife went to it this morning won't start and making this rattling noise intermittently but the engine is turning over. Unfortunately can't pinpoint where noise is coming from either. Does anybody have any ideas what this could be. The galaxy is a 2.3 16v petrol manual. V ref. Thank you in advance Quote
sparky Paul Posted February 22, 2017 Report Posted February 22, 2017 You mean the starter spun the engine over normally, but it would not start? Any sign of it trying to fire up at all, when it was making this rattling noise? Quote
Badbaron Posted February 22, 2017 Author Report Posted February 22, 2017 Hi yes the starter turns engine over normally. However it shows no sign of trying to strike up. The rattling comes intermittently while the engine is turning over but I can't locate the source of it.I know it's a long shot but any ideas? Quote

The starting issue might be the usual relay 30 problem? It might be worth pulling the relay out and either removing the case and resoldering it, or replacing it (should be about £10 at most, possibly less, and they do fail regally so it if hasn't been changed it would be worth ruling out) The easiest test for that is to look at the led on the drivers door - compare when it does start to when it doesn't. Rapid flashing when it fails to start would be immobiliser problem, which would be likely relay 30. Quote
sparky Paul Posted February 24, 2017 Report Posted February 24, 2017 I was starting to think relay 30 too. Quote
