2002 Auto Not Changing Gear

Hi I'm new to site. I of my galaxy about a week now. I noticed that when has been sat over night it sometimes takes ages to change gear. I got in it this morning and set of and it didn't change gear at all. It was going up to 3000 rpm. After about approx 10-20 mins it started working. Any ideas please. Thank you.

I'm guessing an automatic gearbox from what you've said. look at the state of the fluid as the first step, if its gone to looking like tar changing it out may help, there may be damage already done. If it looks normal then scan the gearbox with VCDS lite and see if any faults come up, then search for the faults here.
