panzer Posted February 1, 2017 Report Posted February 1, 2017 Hi, looking for some help with my much loved 2000 mk2 2.3 petrol auto, problem is car drives great on a run but as soon as i pull up at a set of traffic lights or just sitting on driveway she wants to cut out, revs drop and wants to cut out and sometimes does but starts straight away, but normal driving is great.Had car serviced, no inprovement, just have no clue what it is, i wont get rid as shes been my best motor by far, wheelchair fits in it, thats a huge plus. wifes shopping not such a huge plus, 5 grand children say no moreHope someone can advise me so i dont spend or waste any more money.thanks AlanSorry for any bad spelling Quote
BrianH Posted February 1, 2017 Report Posted February 1, 2017 Sounds like a sticky or broken idle control valve to me - it will be on the inlet mainfold near throttle body. Does it keep running if you keep your foot slightly on the throttle? Quote
panzer Posted February 2, 2017 Author Report Posted February 2, 2017 Thanks for the quick reply Brain, when i stop i can usally keep revs up so she dont cut out, but sometimes to rarely cuts out.In my desk i have a brand new idle control valve that needs fitting so will ask my son if hes not to busy, i will let you know the outcome, please let it be that.once again thank you Al Quote
BrianH Posted February 2, 2017 Report Posted February 2, 2017 Sounds like it - you may get some luck drowning it in wd40 as they sometimes just stick, but a new one should sort it. Quote
sparky Paul Posted February 5, 2017 Report Posted February 5, 2017 Yes, they can soot up - I would flood with a bit of petrol, or carb cleaner if you have any, then agitate the plunger until it's free. Easy enough to replace, but access a bit fiddly - bolted to the top of the inlet manifold with two bolts, and there's a single connector. Quote
panzer Posted February 14, 2017 Author Report Posted February 14, 2017 well changed that with brand new one, then leads coil pack, spark plugs, air filter and still the same, any surgestions please, cheers in advance Quote
sparky Paul Posted February 15, 2017 Report Posted February 15, 2017 (edited) Have you checked for inlet manifold and inlet pipework leaks? Pay particular attention to vacuum pipes to the brake servo... any unusual braking problems? Any sort of erratic control of the airflow can cause problems for the idle speed control. Manual gearbox is more tolerant of problems here, but for the auto gearbox, everything has to be spot on. Might be worth checking MAP sensor (manifold pressure) is behaving with diagnostics. Worth doing a full diagnostic check anyway, to check other sensors are working as expected, and for any stored faults - both in the gearbox with VAG-COM, and the engine with a generic code reader. There is a fuel shutoff on the 2.0 also operated by engine vacuum, I'd suspect the same may be the case on the 2.3, that may be worth a look at the same time. Its possible to use carb cleaner to find vacuum leaks - careful application of it to a suspect surface will cause the engine to rev or cut out if its being drawn into the inlet system, in which case you have a leak somewhere in that area (or your spraying it and its getting picked up by the intake) Quote
