Recommended Engine Oil / Lubricant And Changing Mk3

Hello,

 

I'm due an oil change and wondered what the recommendations were regarding oil and viscosity etc. I know the mark 2 TDi's were very particular about oil, are the mark 3 TDCi's more acommodating? I have a 2.0l but feel free to post suggestions for the other engine variants as I think this could be a useful post to have in the FAQ.

 

Also on the subject of oil changes, can a pump be used to extract the oil as with the mk2's or is it an undertray off - sump bolt out job?

im using halfords oil in my smax,buy it when they have a bogof deal.soz cant remember any details about it but its all written on the tin.lol.

havnt used my pump yet on the smax,but i do know the filter is tucked up underneath so yes it is a tray off job,

so i found a willing garage to change the filter and use my oil for about 30 quid.as there stock oil wasnt up to the job,thought it was a good deal.

and saved my hands from getting dirty.
