Hi all

First time poster. Automatic 2.3 problems

The car needed a service and then engine light came on. Then the gears started slipping. It seems to only stay in one gear. Max speed is 30mph on high Rev between 3 and 4.

Car was serviced yesterday and they said there was a heavy oil leak. And to warn about spark plugs but engine light still on

All I want to know is, would it be the spark plugs or anything to do with oil, why its high revving?

Or maybe the gearbox itself?

Any help would be most appreciated.

It's mk2 2000

Cheers

Not likely to be spark plugs. Sounds more like a gearbox issue. If it has a heavy oil leak - where is it leaking from? Is it engine oil or auto transmission fluid?

Well I don't know really to be honest. I'm clueless really when it comes to motors.

Can gearboxes leak fluid then?

They didn't say where it was coming from just that there was one so completely unsure.

Why would the engine light still be on though?

Engine light could be on for any number of reasons - the easiest way to tell is to read the codes using diagnostic equipment of some type (a cheap code reader will do this).

Automatic gearboxes run off hydraulic oil - its different to engine oil, but still oil. If its leaked out leaving not enough in the box it won't work properly.

Have a look for yourself where the oil is coming from if possible as a first step - take photos of what you can see.

Not sure if the auto box may indicate a fault by lighting the engine light - it will have a limp mode to allow you to get it home hopefully without further damage, a few things can cause this to happen though it comes back to getting a code read done.
