jcol Posted February 22, 2016 Report Posted February 22, 2016 My 2002 1.9 TDI is due a cambelt change in a few months time, so now exploring where to get it done. A ford garage quoted £735! Then said that under motorcraft it could be £500. That is using ford parts. Question, are non ford parts ok to use, and if so any particular ones? Also how much should I be paying for the fit. Is it a fit that any garage should be able to do? Thanks for any advice, it is 120,000 mile change Quote
chromedome Posted February 22, 2016 Report Posted February 22, 2016 Also why everything is stripped down it's advisable to change the water pump at the same time. A Ford Dealer will rip you off. Do you know anyone who works at your local Ford garage. I got it done, with genuine parts and water pump, by a friendly mechanic for £200. Quote
jcol Posted February 22, 2016 Author Report Posted February 22, 2016 No,but wish I did! I live in the London area but spend time in suffolk if anyone recommend someone? Quote
Bigjeeze Posted February 23, 2016 Report Posted February 23, 2016 I would firstly go on line & check out GSF and Euro Car parts - the best quality kit including water pump would be around £120.00. You definitely don't need to use "genuine" ford parts - particularly as they would buy them from VW the manufacturer. Labour rates will vary widely but check out your local garages. It is a time consuming job but not difficult, if you are reasonably OK with working on engines . Quote
xavier Posted February 23, 2016 Report Posted February 23, 2016 If you don't feel up to doing it yourself, try and source a local garage that specialises in german / VW cars, rather than a Ford specialist. Shop around for a good price, for a 13 year old car I wouldn't be using a main dealer. Though would be interesting to know what VW would quote! Quote
jcol Posted February 24, 2016 Author Report Posted February 24, 2016 Thanks for your help...much appreciated! Another query, what else does an interim service involve in addition to an oil change? Fords do it for £125 ...is that a good price? Quote
xavier Posted February 25, 2016 Report Posted February 25, 2016 You should be able to find out on line. I suspect that the most expensive bit is the oil change, the rest is likely to be top up washer fluid / check tyre pressures etc. I have the feeling you're a new galaxy owner so save the money for the cam belt change, or whatever else needs done in the interim. I was quoted around £350 for cam belt and water pump when I asked about mine last time it was in getting some work done. I thought that was pricey to be honest. Another option is a mobile mechanic, as the cam belt change is something that can be done on your drive. Quote
