The known normal issue with some VW based cars is down to aftermarket stereos (or more specifically VW not wiring a standard connector as a standard connector). Don't think it effects the galaxy but it may do. Diagnosis should be easy - remove the stereo and try again.

Other places for broken wires typically the door gaiters including the boot, and the passenger side footwell (usually down to leaking rear washer pipe corroding wires at the joint). Reasonably easy to access to check, remove the door surround trim and pull carpet back.

cheers brian, the stereo is standard for 6000 with changer.  washer pipe is ok and not leaking. im unsure of a blown terminating resistor amongst the circuit somewhere such as instrument panel, a/c, ecu, if my internet search is correct. ill unplug and check thanks.

Given that its killed the first cat did you fit a lambda sensor when the replacement was fitted? I don't think the stereo will be relevent as its generally a CAN bus issue, which the Galaxy doesn't have AFAIK.

What are they trying to connect to the central locking etc with - VCDS should work, a generic scanner probably not (same applies for ford scanners - engine will probably come up, very little else will AFAIK). If you don't have vcds then you can obtain a suitable lead from ebay to test for yourself and download vcds lite (suitable lead can be had for less than £10)

I'd think the sensor is more likely than an ignition fault given it happens when warm, though coil packs can play up when warm and be ok when cold so its a possibility.

hi, its running ok at the min apart from its running rich, I wanted to get it all sorted before fitting the new cat and 02 sensors as there not cheap and don't want to burn them straight out within weeks/ months. it wont connect to anything and ive got a airbag light on as ive had to take the dash out to sort the main wire feed that was burning the junction box up and cant turn it off as there is no connection to anything. it went in for there been no eml on and it would appear that when it got put in the garage when they cut the cat to bits found it necessary to tape up the eml with electrical tape. nice I know but will never go in a garage again and I should have known better. im not sure what computers or software hes using but did clearly state that between his 2 computers he had over £7.500 so wouldn't imagine there useless. theres just no connection to any form of modules or ecu.

cheers brian

Not good. I'd suspect lambda sensor though is reason your running rich. It might be worth getting a multimeter on it to see what voltage is coming out of it. Could also be wiring to it though. Otherwise your down to tracing wiring diagrams and relying on them being right.

On the software side the price means nothing if it's not the right tool for the job. For the sake of the price of a vcds cable it will save you with the first use of it. Plus not having to rely on others to see if you can sort the issue.

If it is really down to what he's highlighted then it may help pulling fuses to isolate it somewhat though no guarantee that will work. But suspect it's going to be down to something obscure if he hasn't already found it.

One thought occurs about the dash being out. On mine there's a bunch of wires that goto a ground point just above the fusebox. Are they still tight and making contact?
Posted

hi brian. yep still tight and nice and clean. he stated thers no communication wich is caused by a possible break in 2 wires or a disconnection. he was kind enough to tell and show me which 2 on the diagnostic connector it was. he also said he hasn't got the time to be pulling my dash and ripping the loom apart to find. (he is good and reliable at what he does and used him a couple of times) he also spent a bit of time and doing the diagnostics on it and told me that a payment wasn't necessary and that if he had to do the work would be in the region of £400. I checked the 02 sensors when I was having all my previous issues previously and I can only assume it was over fuelling before which caused the cat malfunction as it was around the same time  I had connection probs? I cant believe all the trouble from this car I wish I could just buy another car altogether. BUT THAT DOESNT MEAN THAT THE APPRECIATION ISNT THERE FOR ALL YOUR HELP ( capitals is not my shouting mode in this instance its my getting my appreciation point across and allowing it to be clearly seen).

THANKS

You might be down to removing the dash again, though at least you know how it comes out now having done it once before. Though the break could well be elsewhere, the airbag module is under the dash as far as i know (never had to do anything with it other than reset it after replacing broken clock spring on mine).

I'd try pulling fuses out firstly as its simple to do so, but you need a way to test the communications to see if your even looking in the right area, so i don't see a way of getting round that without getting hold of a vcds cable. > this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-KKL-VAG-COM-Cable-409-1-ODB-II-ODB2-Auto-Diagnostic-VW-Audi-Skoda-Tool-UK-/for example is sufficient for what you need, and will let you reset the airbag light once you have got the communications issue sorted as well.

yeah sure looks like the dash out again. I hated doing this. this may take some narrowing down tho. I was told just to do continuity tests to find it. sounds easy and is easy if you know where all the components are and any wire colour changes. Haynes manual doesn't show anything for this wiring. thanks for the help brianh

Have had one thought before you go too far. Drop the fusebox down and pull out the relays. Check nothing burnt on them and reseat them in their sockets. Just in case reason you can't get responses from controllers is down to lack of power
Posted

now you mention it I do recall 1 of the relays looking a little fried but as I remember what it was for was working but think it was relay 3 (marking on the holder) on the under layer. hope this makes sense

Not sure which fusebox you have in your mk2 - the relay number 3 is labelled in what i've got to hand as the inverter relay on the 2.0/2.3 - I'm not 100% sure what that actually means or if it matches yours. In the absence of a better plan pull it out and see what happens - I take it you still have the running issues as well as the airbag light etc at present?
