Aux Input Poor Audio Quality

Hi all. Just picked up a 2012 zetec with aux input. When I connect my phone to play music the audio is very poor. Crackles and not very loud even with phone volume on max.

I'll have a go at cleaning the socket but wondered if there is a known issue I can look into before spending hours tracing cables.
