Galaxy 2005 2.0ltdi  Auto

On the motorway or going up a hill my car goes into limp mode, but 9 times out of 10 when i turn engine off and then strait on again while in motion the car goes back to normal.

But it is doing it more and more now. i have scanner have no warning on the dash or any fault codes.

I have seen loads of ideas what it could be.

it sounds like the turbo vanes are stuck........you will get a code with a vcds scanner........charge pressure positive deviation..........a very common fault

Which means it's the turbo vanes. And a 1.9 tdi. So VCDS would work. Does it have roof rails and seats that come out, or do the seats fold into the floor?

Yeah, that's not surprising. Do a search for limp mode in the mk2 forum. To summarise, check whether the actuator on the turbo is seized. If not, there's probably a leak in the vaccum piping somewhere. If it's seized, you can either replace the turbo, remove turbo and send it away to get refurbished, remove the turbo and strip it down and clean yourself, or use innotec cleaner to try and clean the turbo. I use the innotec, have had mixed results with it but it's cheap and I can do it myself.

It's not necessarily turbo vanes that need cleaning.

For me, we replaced the air mass sensor / MAF sensor (about £50) and it was fixed. It was covered in a light film of oil which affected it's ability to report the correct air flow which is why the car went into emergency mode.

Oh, and we took it to a dealership beforehand and they suggested the turbo was replaced at £1000. Muppets. When you look at a turbo, there is hardly anything to break.

Good luck. The car is a pain when it goes into that mode.

The next thing is have a look at the  air mass sensor / MAF sensor, i will try to clean that 1st, can anyone tell me is my galaxy is fitted with a Variable Geometry Turbo. someone suggested the vanes need cleaning.

Thanks

I'm not sure the sensor's can be cleaned. If you have a lap top you can get a cable and VCDS Lite (shareware) software that'll give you more diagnostics than a generic OBDII reader could give you. You could then scan the engine for fault codes. My local garage couldn't see the overboost code when my turbo was stuck, but I could see it on VCDS with the cable. If you can get the car up on a ramp or on a high kerb you can check the VNT mechanism. I think you can get an arm in over the top, use a 14mm spanner on the actuator and see if it'll move. One of these jobs that's easy to do when you know where it is. Do a search in the Mk2 forum.

Thanks for the offer but i am in Belvedere Kent so its a bit hard.

I do have an update i cleaned the car with

Wynns Diesel EGR 3 (200ML) - Air Intake, Inlet Valves EGR & Turbo Cleaner

It seemed to fix the problem, it didnt go into limp mode and i had kickdown back, but it only lasted a day or two then it went back to as it was, so i think i need the clean it more
