nickcockman Posted October 1, 2015 Report Posted October 1, 2015 Hi - just a quick question... Will the mk3 tdci (2008 2.2) take a battery with dimensions 175mm x 175mm x 315mm? Various sites suggest it will, but I wanted to check. I know that I could pull the current battery out and see if it takes a slightly longer one, but was hoping I could save myself the hassle if someone has already put a longer battery in their galaxy... :) Thanks in advance!Cheers,Nick Quote
nickcockman Posted October 2, 2015 Author Report Posted October 2, 2015 In answer to my own question ;) the galaxy takes up to a 315mm length battery - in fact the current battery I have is this length Ford branded one. I've ordered a Varta F18 silver 85Ah 800 A CCA from Tayna Batteries on ebay for £78.95 all in - seems like a good price to me... Cheers,Nick BTW - full battery dimensions are 315mm x 175mm x 175mm (length/width/height) and the battery tray in the galaxy accepts 315mm length and then there are two smaller positions for the clamp around 30mm between each bolt point one. Also, to remove the battery, pop off the plastic air pipes off the filter and pop out the air filter box. The front of the plastic cover round the battery unclips on either side and can be removed. Disconnect the positive and make sure it is out of the way. On the right hand side unscrew the earthing strap where it is bolted to the car - this is an extension wire that goes from battery earth to the car. Then unscrew the battery clamp at the front of the battery and slide the battery out. Easy, but I didn't find many references on the web... :) Quote
xavier Posted October 14, 2015 Report Posted October 14, 2015 Thanks for this, been looking to replace the battery in my new motor in the run up to winter, 7 years old and no history of it being done. Do you have to remove all the filter or just (what I assume) is the top half? And can you remove the earth before the positive, I thought that was the way we were meant to do it to eliminate the risk of short circuit between tools and body. Quote
xavier Posted October 14, 2015 Report Posted October 14, 2015 I was looking at a Bosch Silver on carparts4less, 101 then deducting their £15 off for spending £100 is 86. Had a good experience with Bosch silvers in the past. Quote
xavier Posted October 20, 2015 Report Posted October 20, 2015 (edited) Managed to get the battery changed today. Needless to say I should have done some googling before starting but never mind. Once I figure out how to post images I'll add some! Edited October 20, 2015 by xavier Quote
xavier Posted October 23, 2015 Report Posted October 23, 2015 (edited) Ok, some pics. This is how I did it. 1 - dog / rabbit http://googledrive.com/host/0B0JQ9-v286HrMXd3MHJZUlJ0ZVU/IMAG2328.jpg 2 - I disconnect MAF sensor cable and undo jubilee clip. Apparently you don't normally need to remove the sensor cable but I had to remove more air box than expected! http://googledrive.com/host/0B0JQ9-v286HrMXd3MHJZUlJ0ZVU/IMAG2329.jpg 3 - my clip + air hose disconnected http://googledrive.com/host/0B0JQ9-v286HrMXd3MHJZUlJ0ZVU/IMAG2333.jpg 4 - after I removed airbox http://googledrive.com/host/0B0JQ9-v286HrMXd3MHJZUlJ0ZVU/IMAG2334.jpg Ok, that's not how I should have removed the airbox. what I should have done is pull this clip back and disconnect the airbox from the inlet pipe. I couldn't see it, and so removed the entire box. http://googledrive.com/host/0B0JQ9-v286HrMXd3MHJZUlJ0ZVU/IMAG2345.jpg 5 - Inow have clearance to remove the battery. First, I removed the plastic cover over the front of the battery. It seems to want to pivot, but it doesn't, I just pulled it off from the "hinges" either side. http://googledrive.com/host/0B0JQ9-v286HrMXd3MHJZUlJ0ZVU/IMAG2335.jpg 6 - Cover removed http://googledrive.com/host/0B0JQ9-v286HrMXd3MHJZUlJ0ZVU/IMAG2337.jpg 7 - I then undid the battery clamp (8mm) http://googledrive.com/host/0B0JQ9-v286HrMXd3MHJZUlJ0ZVU/IMAG2339.jpg 8 - Then pulled the battery forward until I could undo rear clamp. Then I undid the front clamp. http://googledrive.com/host/0B0JQ9-v286HrMXd3MHJZUlJ0ZVU/IMAG2340.jpg 9 - new vs old. The old one looks pretty good, and I'm just replacing it as I had assumed it was an original. Doh! http://googledrive.com/host/0B0JQ9-v286HrMXd3MHJZUlJ0ZVU/IMAG2341.jpg Edited October 23, 2015 by xavier Quote
xavier Posted October 23, 2015 Report Posted October 23, 2015 10 - Installation is the reverse of removal (or so they say!). I smeared some petroleum jelly on the new battery's terminals before fitting the connectors. http://googledrive.com/host/0B0JQ9-v286HrMXd3MHJZUlJ0ZVU/IMAG2342.jpg 11 - I then bolted the battery clamp down - new battery bigger than the old one! http://googledrive.com/host/0B0JQ9-v286HrMXd3MHJZUlJ0ZVU/IMAG2343.jpg Will finish this off in the next post, still have images loading! xavier Posted October 25, 2015 Report Posted October 25, 2015 12 - I "separated" the inlet pipe from the air box. This required a bit of brute force. And I broke the clip (I did open it first, honest!). So hot glued it back on. http://googledrive.com/host/0B0JQ9-v286HrMXd3MHJZUlJ0ZVU/IMAG2349.jpg 13 - Then I loosely re-installed air inlet pipe http://googledrive.com/host/0B0JQ9-v286HrMXd3MHJZUlJ0ZVU/IMAG2350.jpg 14 - I put the battery cables into their grommets, and put the cover back on the battery http://googledrive.com/host/0B0JQ9-v286HrMXd3MHJZUlJ0ZVU/IMAG2351.jpg 15 - Nearly done. I then put the air box back in. It's a bit of a fiddle to get the intake pipe lined up and in as there's not a lot of space there. Here's a shot of the intake pipe clipped back on. http://googledrive.com/host/0B0JQ9-v286HrMXd3MHJZUlJ0ZVU/IMAG2353.jpg 16 - and the airbox http://googledrive.com/host/0B0JQ9-v286HrMXd3MHJZUlJ0ZVU/IMAG2354.jpg 17 - just need to re-connect the airbox to engine air feed pipe and the maf sensor cable http://googledrive.com/host/0B0JQ9-v286HrMXd3MHJZUlJ0ZVU/IMAG2355.jpg 18 - and I'm done! http://googledrive.com/host/0B0JQ9-v286HrMXd3MHJZUlJ0ZVU/IMAG2356.jpg Quote
