PembsPanther Posted August 12, 2015 Report Posted August 12, 2015 Morning All :) Love love love my new Galaxy :) Making may way through a list of jobs to be done and doing really well, since I picked it up I noticed that sometimes when driving, say you have been stuck at around 3000 revs for a while, when I dip the clutch to change gear the rev-down is so so so slow, this does not happen all the time but often enough to notice it. Not sure if I misunderstood but I did take off the idle control valve and cleaned all the gunks out of it but it has made no difference, any suggestions? I was thinking maybe throttle body needs cleaning but thought I would ask you guys first. Thanks in advance. Quote
sparky Paul Posted August 12, 2015 Report Posted August 12, 2015 I think you're on the right trail. Was there much gunge in the ICV? You usually only find a light build up of carbon, and not oily. Was the shuttle free to move without any sticking? My next step would probably be the throttle body too. Quote
PembsPanther Posted August 12, 2015 Author Report Posted August 12, 2015 Hi Paul Yes loads of carbon build up was moving lovely when cleaned, I have a bit of running about to do until after lunch think I will take tge air box off and have a good look this afternoon. Thanks Quote
sparky Paul Posted August 12, 2015 Report Posted August 12, 2015 Sounds like a good plan. Also worth checking inlet pipework between throttle & manifold and vacuum pipes on manifold for splits, etc. Quote
PembsPanther Posted August 12, 2015 Author Report Posted August 12, 2015 Thanks i will check all that at the same time, I will report back later........... Quote
BrianH Posted August 12, 2015 Report Posted August 12, 2015 particually check the end of the pipework that runs to the brake servo, its known to split at the end without a noticeable loss of vacuum assist so easily missed. Quote
PembsPanther Posted August 13, 2015 Author Report Posted August 13, 2015 Evening All :) What a day! I will go into more about that in my other thread, right took the throttle body off yesterday afternoon, nice place they chose to put it! Got it off and it was quite dirty: http://i62.tinypic.com/1zezevc.jpg http://i59.tinypic.com/2uyj4af.jpg So we give it a good scrubbing and clean it up as best and as gently as I can: http://i61.tinypic.com/28hpze0.jpg http://i62.tinypic.com/2hec7bb.jpg Good result really quite pleased with that, took a whole can of throttle body cleaner to do it but we got there with a little persuasion, whilst drying it off having quick clean up of the outside I notice a big yellow sticker, no idea how I missed it saying the following: http://i57.tinypic.com/bjddkw.jpg mmmmmmmmm :32: well done me! After much excitement I resound myself to the fact that if it now fails I will have to replace it lesson learned move on, however it has not cured the fault in fact it is now a bit worst than it was to begin with so this now brings me back to the idle control valve and I am thinking this is mainly what will cause this "sticking"? So might just order a new one and see if that cures it, I do not usually like buying a new part to basically test a theory I like to try and be a bit more definitive about it but I "think" it is logical to now suspect this is bad? No obvious leaks anywhere checked everything literally. Quote
BrianH Posted August 13, 2015 Report Posted August 13, 2015 It may be the actuator is just worn out in it rather than it sticking as such, really hard to tell without being able to see it doing what its supposed to do. Your probably fine on the throttle plate - cleaning with a wire brush would probably cause more issues than carb cleaner, though you never know if someone else has done the same previously anyway! New gasket wouldn't be the worst idea either if you haven't already replaced it (the one between the throttle body and the manifold) Quote
BrianH Posted August 13, 2015 Report Posted August 13, 2015 Might be an idea to check it isn't the throttle cable - if its stiff to move it may be retracting slowly rather than allowing the throttle to close. An assistant to move the pedal while you watch the throttle plate should tell you. Quote
PembsPanther Posted August 27, 2015 Author Report Posted August 27, 2015 Hi Brian I did have my doubts about the throttle cable, there seems to be a lot of it, more that needed anyway it kind of loops back on itself which seems bizarre but when I had it all apart it was really free moving with no problems, it returns fine as soon as the pedal is released. I will order a new idle control valve later and slap that on this weekend see if that helps. According to ETIS there should be an O ring between the throttle body and manifold however for the life of me I could not see one when I had it apart, so I have either completely missed it (would not surprise me!) or it was not so I am going to try and track down a new O ring and also replace / add this at the same time. The problem on the whole seems to be a little bit better, it does still stick but not quite as much as it was, either way it is a fault somewhere so I need to find it. Quote
chromedome Posted August 27, 2015 Report Posted August 27, 2015 No O ring, air leak, increased revs................maybe. Quote
BrianH Posted August 28, 2015 Report Posted August 28, 2015 If its similar to the other zetec mainfolds the o-ring isn't actually an o-ring, its a rubber gasket like the rocker cover one. If it is leaking you might be able to pinpoint the leak with carb cleaner (spray a little where the leak is suspected to be - if the engine reacts its being drawn in and burnt, don't get too carried away though with it) It would be on the joint you've exposed in your photos (you can see the outline of it in the photos, but maybe its past its best if it is still there) Does this help at all http://eucatparts.com/?action=cat_ford_part&s_id_part=24812&s_id_model=99&s_code_image=G002114503 Quote
BrianH Posted August 28, 2015 Report Posted August 28, 2015 The other possibility is the speed sensor in the gearbox - the mk1 focus is known for having this problem due to it, not sure if its a known galaxy issue though. Quote
