leerd001 Posted July 18, 2015 Report Posted July 18, 2015 I have just changed the o/s/f road spring on my galaxy and changed both sides top strut mounts/bearings, but my galaxy (mk 1 tdi) is very noisy when I turn left mainly. Any advise please. Also my n/s/f wishbone bushes are soft, could this affect the steering? Quote
BrianH Posted July 18, 2015 Report Posted July 18, 2015 What sort of noise is it?Do you get the same noise when trying to turn whilst stationary (engine running) or just whilst moving? Quote
leerd001 Posted July 18, 2015 Author Report Posted July 18, 2015 Both unfortunately, its like a judder and can be heard from outside too. Steering feels heavy. Quote
BrianH Posted July 18, 2015 Report Posted July 18, 2015 probabbly not drivershafts then, hows the fluid level in the power steering looking? any signs of leakage of oil on the steering rack or elsewhere? Quote
leerd001 Posted July 19, 2015 Author Report Posted July 19, 2015 I have a slight oil leak on the n/s of the steering rack, probably a contributing factor. Seems funny that this has all of a sudden come to light after changing a coil spring and top strut rubbers too Quote
BrianH Posted July 19, 2015 Report Posted July 19, 2015 It may be one of the seals is sticking on the rack, would suggest you try to raise the front of the car and see if the steering becomes any lighter - if not disconnect the rack (undo the track rod ends) and see if the wheels themselves move as you'd expect, this should allow you to narrow down the area with the fault.  If there is oil leaking from the rack though I'd suspect thats where your problem lies. I would have a look in the reservoir as you may be losing it to inside the boot on the end of the rack so it may be running without enough oil in the system as a result hence the heavy steering. Quote
leerd001 Posted July 19, 2015 Author Report Posted July 19, 2015 The n/s boot was slightly damp and the oil level is ok. Not yet jacked up the car, will do that tomorrow when I replace the n/s wishbone. Steering racks seem to be expensive, any cheaper options? Quote
BrianH Posted July 19, 2015 Report Posted July 19, 2015 Scour eBay or parts breakers seems the cheaper option from what others have said Quote
leerd001 Posted July 22, 2015 Author Report Posted July 22, 2015 Than you Brian, problem sorted with steering. Car went for MOT and failed on airbag warning light on all the time. Any ideas to try and get this sorted cheaply. Thanks Quote
BrianH Posted July 22, 2015 Report Posted July 22, 2015 Probably clock spring. You need vcds lead to reset it anyway so first step is get that. Then use it to find the error being logged. If it mentioned drivers airbag and intermittent clock spring (also known as the squib) is next thing I'd suggest. If it mentions something else post back Vcds leads can be found on eBay for a few pounds. Just use with vcds lite from Ross tech which is free Quote
leerd001 Posted July 22, 2015 Author Report Posted July 22, 2015 Thanks Brian, I have a friend who has diagnostic equipment from snapon, hopefully that will tell me what the fault is. I will let you know what it comes up with. Quote
leerd001 Posted July 23, 2015 Author Report Posted July 23, 2015 Can you tell me the part number for the clock spring or squib for a mk1 1.9 tdi galaxy as I have a chance of buying one for 20 pounds not used. Thankyou Quote
daddyfixit Posted July 23, 2015 Report Posted July 23, 2015 steering rack burst on mine last Saturday.....nearside pouring oil out. got an exchange rack fitted, was advised that alternator freewheel pulley was goosed.................caused noises/judders on full lock, this was masked by the p.a.s. pump being noisy when fluid was lost. no warning/odd noises---just packed in !  fitted new one on Monday and now spending rest of my hols sorting out niggles/rattles and a full service. Quote
leerd001 Posted July 23, 2015 Author Report Posted July 23, 2015 My steering rack started leaking a couple of weeks ago and had to fit a replacement for the mot. Car failed on airbag light. Need a clock spring for it from somewhere cheap. Any ideas? Quote
BrianH Posted July 23, 2015 Report Posted July 23, 2015 If you want the part number still pm me your vin or reg and I'll look it up on tis. Otherwise if you look at the link below theres two options - looks to depend on the type of horn push you have (mine is a 98 petrol model and has the lower picture type which I'd think yours has as well?) http://eucatparts.com/?action=cat_ford_part&s_id_part=24447&s_id_model=98&s_code_image=G001580001 Quote
BrianH Posted July 23, 2015 Report Posted July 23, 2015 and a new one will give you less hassle - if your trying a used one i'd suggest you connect it up before installing it to try and ensure it works ok (the first one i got didn't, i managed a couple of weeks later to find a new one on ebay which has been fine since) Quote
leerd001 Posted July 23, 2015 Author Report Posted July 23, 2015 Thanks Brian, I managed to find one on ebay for 19.99 guaranteed. It has come out of a 2000 mk1 is that ok? Quote
BrianH Posted July 23, 2015 Report Posted July 23, 2015 Don't know for sure, but would expect so. There only seems 2 options for the mk1 from the earlier link which appear to be quite different in appearance (i would assume the seperate horn switches are the later mk1 style, but don't know for sure). Have you verified its actually the drivers airbag showing the fault? You will need to be able to reset it as well so if you haven't got the scanner to talk to it you may want to get a vcds lead sorted out? Quote
leerd001 Posted July 23, 2015 Author Report Posted July 23, 2015 It went on a scanner today and proved it is the horn ring at fault. Quote
BrianH Posted July 23, 2015 Report Posted July 23, 2015 Figures it would be as its the part given the most wear (every time the wheel is moved of course). Just worth confirming as a few other things can cause it to come up as well. Quote
leerd001 Posted July 24, 2015 Author Report Posted July 24, 2015 2 other faults on the car is rear coil Springs broken are they easy to do? And when I switch the ignition off, the dashboard is still live, any ideas? Quote
BrianH Posted July 24, 2015 Report Posted July 24, 2015 If the ignition switch is working as it should it doesn't cut power to the radio until you actually remove the key from the ignition (not just turn it to 0). Which i only found out when i started having issues with the radio (which was a faulty ignition switch) and replaced the switch after finding turning the key back from 2 slightly stopped the issue (worn out switch it seems). No idea on the coil springs though they don't look too difficult as they aren't surrounding the strut? Are you sure they are actually broken and its not drop links required? (coil springs rarely go on these, Drop links seem a common problem though) Quote
leerd001 Posted July 25, 2015 Author Report Posted July 25, 2015 The coil Springs are actually broken, so they need replacing as part of the MOT. The radio turns off when the key is removed, but the digital displays are still reading and the fuel and temp gauges are still reading. Up until a few months ago, they all used to switch off and nothing is displayed. Quote
BrianH Posted July 25, 2015 Report Posted July 25, 2015 The usual cause of odd electrical problems which don't have an obvious cause is broken wires in the door gaiters. Especially the one for the boot. I'd suggest checking that first. Don't know on the coils but guess you will be finding out. The front ones can be troublesome due to the top nut. Quote
leerd001 Posted July 25, 2015 Author Report Posted July 25, 2015 The rear coil Springs were easy to do. Just remove the bottom shock bolts and jack up the rear axle until the wheels are off the ground and pull the old Springs out, push the new ones in and lower the car to put the shock bolts back in. Just the electrical issues to sort out now. Quote
