Hello All

 

I've recently purchased this and have put up with the issue for 5 months but now I need to tackle it and not sure where to start.

 

While the car is running, sometimes the windows wind down but won't wind up again. When the ignition key is out the car spuriously locks and unlocks and the windows randomly wind up and down. I'm going to fit a battery cut-off as I'm getting fed up of removing one of the battery terminals and will probably hard wire the window motors separate from the loom.

 

Just thought I'd post here before I get stuck in just in case anyone can point me towards anything to try first?

The other possibilty if the gaiters look ok (don't rule out the boot one when your checking!) is a stuck switch in the door lock mechanism. You can rule the switch out by just unplugging it.

 

Are any of your door lock barrels broken? (the global opening works off holding the key, so if its stuck it will do that!).

wires in osf door will be shorting out, very common.

 

and once you have repaired the ones you find faulty the others will play up in sympathy !!

As stated door wiring, I'd lock up car go shopping come back and find doors n windows open! Looked inside rubber door gaters and found a nightmare of broken and bare wires, repaired and problem disappeard.

You know, I'd checked the FAQ and done some Googling but thought the gaiters looked to be in good order but following your replies just had a go at looking inside (wow - big plug!) and yup, a melange of broken and bare wires and cracked insulation.

So.....what's the best method of repair? There's limited space so presumably it's one door off at a time and manually replace each broken wire (splice and heat shrink them one by one)?

 

Got a 1100km drive tomorrow morning so not starting any big jobs right now.

I did a visit to scrap yard and cut out wires from inside door pillars makes life easy as same color code and same current handling capacity. Don't forget to do rear hatch as same problem there, mine were a mess so again visit to yard for wire and joined inside rear pillar and in rear hatch.

Just to add to my last post there is no need to take doors off to do repair, i made a C scanner to un wind plug n take door card off.

It can be done in situ as stated above just make yourself some slack by removing the door card and allowing more of the slack to come loose. Some heatshrink is useful to make the job easier/longer lasting (just remeber to stick it over the wire before joining it!). If the boot is a mangled mess when you look into it then you can use trailer lighting wire for the thinner cables to make it a bit easier. you may be lucky and only have a few broken ones there.

Scrap yards here in France aren't like in the UK so I can't do the same unfortunately.

 

Connectors to all doors disconnected presently and I'll tackle this on my return.

Turns out popping the central locking fuse seems to have made it all bearable for the trip. More of a concern was both radiators fans packing in which made the return journey a bit of an adventure.
