ric220 Posted April 27, 2015 Author Report Posted April 27, 2015 Ok now I'm intrigued! What the heck does this mysterious relay 30 that I've heard so much about actually do?? Quote
BrianH Posted April 27, 2015 Report Posted April 27, 2015 Well its usually the cause for the car failing to start. Supplies power to the immobiliser (or fails to) and hence allows the car to crank but not fire. Fairly sure its at fault as when i went to start after filling up today it didn't want to start (and could hear clicking coming from the fusebox as well). Supposed to be poor solder joints that break ("go dry") over time and hence starts as an intermittent fault (i've driven 160 mile trip without any sign of problems with it, then found it decided to go on me when i went to the garage to fill up around a mile from home!), that can be quite hard to locate as you can't be sure you have actually fixed the problem just because it does start! The plus side is that its an easy/cheap fix compared to what you might be dealing with elsewhere once you know the cause/symptoms. Quote
ric220 Posted April 27, 2015 Author Report Posted April 27, 2015 Ok many thanks. I'm thinking I should carry a spare. While on the subject of engines I should sing the praises of the VAG 1.8t. Made for over 17 years and fitted to almost all models from volkswagen audi seat and skoda (ok that's only 2 manufacturers but still), it's a brilliant bit of engineering. Very tough, minimum of 150bhp (as in my sharan), smooth, even power without much turbo lag, and a flutter from the wastegate whenever easing off the throttle! It's lightweight, compact and easily tuned to at least 200bhp (although some have tweaked to 600+bhp). Clearly trying to tune the engine of a people carrier is purely denial of the fact that (like me) you're past 40 and a parent. But still - nice to know I could... Quote
BrianH Posted April 28, 2015 Report Posted April 28, 2015 At least your not asking about fitting a wastegate on a TDI though (unlike one of the posts in another section of this forum) Quote
viperclive Posted May 2, 2015 Report Posted May 2, 2015 Just realised Brian your tank holds 47ltrs, mines smaller max I've squeezed into my tank is 38 ltrs. Quote
BrianH Posted May 2, 2015 Report Posted May 2, 2015 Im unsure of the capacity as i've seen it fill to over 50l sometimes, but stop around 40 at others (was brought as a non-runner already converted previously). Having rechecked recently though i seem to get over 200 miles to a tank now though need to run completely empty to tell for sure (clutch has been changed since the last time i checked accurately how far i could get and suspect i'd been losing some miles due to it slipping anyway) Quote
niall1001 Posted May 7, 2015 Report Posted May 7, 2015 My current car,a mk2 2.3 has been very good to us,yes it's 14 yrs old so it's had a few parts in the 2 years that I've owned it but they were just age related stuff,I've been very happy with it and it's been very reliable, compared to our mk2 Alhambra pd previously That came up with constant issues,I would say they ok until something goes wrong,Maybe as I'm used to ford petrol engines and not diesel I'm biased but as I don't use my car during the week as a have a company van,the fuel economy has never bothered me,I probably get around 28 round town and 35 on a run.
