Hi again,

Would anyone be able to give me some advice on a small oil leak from the oil return pipe on the turbo please? It is only a small weeping as far as I can tell, unfortunately though when it drips some of it goes onto part of the exhaust then causes a few minutes of smoke! The smoke enters the cabin so stinks and really need to get it sorted... :(

I have attached a picture showing where I think the oil is coming from. The car still drives fine, and there doesn't appear to be any problems with the turbo - no noise,  smoke or noticeable loss of oil etc. so hopefully there is nothing wrong with the turbo!

1. Is it common for this pipe to start leaking where it joins the turbo?

2. Could it be something more serious than just a leaking return pipe which might cause turbo problems at some point?

3. How easy is it to fix it? What's required to get to both bolts of the return pipe mount bracket to replace the gasket?

4. Can I just make up a bracket with a little plate to collect the oil and then empty it every year?! ;)

Any info is much appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Nick

Did you get any reply or update on this problem. My galaxy has developed the same problem looks a simple repair, the fitting at the bottom of the engine looks straight forward and aches ankle from underneath. However the top fitting looks difficult to get to!

I seem to have a similar problem on my 2009 2.2 Galaxy Ghia, 62,000 miles, and would appreciate any assistance.

  • last weekend, after driving for 40 minutes i could smell smoke, lifted the bonnet and smoke was coming from the rear, right hand side of the engine. Thought it was going to catch fire. Thought it was an oil leak from a pipe or turbo onto exhaust. Could not put family back in car so arranged recovery to my trusted  local garage.
  • Garage could not replicate the problem after leaving on tick-over on ramp for 45 minutes and taking for 25 minutes drive. No obvious oil-leaks.
  • This weekend, went for 200-mile round trip drive, no recurrence of problem.
  • Today, after 30 minutes drive, exact repeat of initial problem, smoke coming from right hand rear of engine.

Does anyone else have a similar intermittent experience?

Does this vehicle have an auxiliary heater? although references to smoke on other forums are when cold, not after a reasonable drive?

pls heeeeeelp

thanks, Neil

Hi Neil

Just having same kinda problem from same kinda place of the engine last january...

I do live in Finland, the land of "siberian simulation" really especially in this wintertime... We have had some 25-35 minus degrees C for about three weeks almost continuously... I just came from work, having amazed the hard smoke onto exhaus pipes. Engine cut off, I stepped out and saw the trails of oil till the pipes, went then under the bonnet to look the oil dip. Just when lifted the dip, fire popped out somewhere at the situation you described... And all the time thicker smoke... Then, after the visit of the local fire brigade and the towing car, Galaxy spent some one and a half month at the Ford-dealer...

Finally seemed to be - primary reason was the frozen engine breather system. Pressure then forced  the engine oil to the exhaust system (first thought was via the turbo) and the hot oil got much more hotter in the DPF, which set on fire. Luckily enough, the fire set off as soon as started. Damaged parts of course were the dpf, catalyst, big part of the pipes, heat shealds and so on. But the turbocharger, undamaged.

Now the car is in the everyday use. No traces whatsoever, engine seems and hears to be ok. This kinda problems are been quite usual here with the french made cars specially, the breather problems in wintertime. This engine IS based on PSA tdci -engines... Similarity???!

  :35: Hello All,

Has anybody managed to resolve the oil leaking from the turbo onto the exhaust? My 2009 2.2tdci has just developed a small leak that drops onto the exhaust. Any information would be most welcome

Thanks

Just to follow up on this old thread. My mechanic friend created a plate bent to shape to send the oil around the exhaust and then into the plastic under tray. He also did this for a 2.2 mondeo with a similar issue. He found a spare bolt thread to attach the plate to the engine. Obviously the way to fix it properly is to get at the top of the return pipe to replace gasket, but this involves a load of work to get to it! Rubbish design...

I have since got rid of my 2008 galaxy and bought a 2012. I lost faith with the 2.2 (~140k on the clock) as clutch was on way out and it kept going into limp mode and still had the occassional smoke smell when a drop managed to find it's way to the exhaust. I also had to soak up a load of oil from the under tray on it's last service. Much happier with the newer one although my wallet is some what lighter :(  Needs must when it is our only car...

Cheers,

Nick
