In the brochure Ford describe their coolbox/fridge as intelligent and turns off when the battery voltage drops. Someone in my car recently told me that this functionality is built into the lead that plugs it in and as my lead is nothing but a hard wire and has no electronic components, it will not have this protection.

Does anyone know if the intelligence is built into the box itself or the power lead? My box is a genuine Ford version.

I have also been told that the Galaxy rear sockets in the by the tailgate are power protected against draining the battery, is this true?

Yes the power sockets in the boot have some protection against power drain, however I just cannot bring myself to try it just in case i jet stuck up the hills in the middle of nowhere with cold food and a dead battery and the wife and kids screaming at me

DaveC,

Is the sensor built into the box itself or the lead? If it is the lead there will probably be a moulded lump somewhere between the two ends.

I have a 12v coolbox, bought in France some time ago which we originally used to cool beer when caravanning as wife wouldn't let me empty food out of caravan fridge to fill up that up with beer!

I use it with my current Gal, May 2000(!). First time I parked for a while and left the coolbox running car wouldn't start when I went back to it, was plugged into rear 12v socket. But I did discover the car battery was duff a couple of weeks later. Remembered to unplug it when parked since, so problem not repeated itself. Maybe the early Gals don't have sensor or was just 'cos my battery was u.s.

Learned another lesson here  as well. Neighbour near where I flattened battery loaned me his jump-leads but wouldn't turn my battery over so RAC called. RAC man said need heavy duty jump leads for this size of engine. Bought some when I got home. Next time battery was flat (before it was replaced) Wife's small Corsa battery started the Gal with my new heavy duty leads. Thereby lies a morale, don't scrimp on jump leads, they will be a waste of time! :P

don't want to wee on anyone's bonfire but the current galaxy manual [in relation to the 12v power sockets] says "...if the engine is not running, this will cause the battery to discharge."

So, i guess you need to take care when running appliances off the 12v supplies

Sorry

What I meant to say, before pressing too many keys was that towsure.co.uk do a fridge lead that has the cutout system. I flattened my battery just by leaving my fridge plugged in for too long one weekend.

Last weekend I left the fridge connected on the new lead for four days and still had the power to start.

My 150w mains inverter give an audible warning of low voltage before switching off.

Thanks for that. I no longer have the original lead and needed to know if the protection was in the box or the lead. It is the lead from what you say. Ford won't supply a replacement lead without a whole new lid for over

My MK1's battery went flat when I left my (Halfords) fridge plugged in overnight. Thankfully I was parked on a hill.

The battery was new and showing a full charge on the indicator before I did it BTW, I thought it would have a sufficient AHC to do it, I was wrong.

Well, i had to confess to this one day.... We were staying overnite in Switzerland on hols and didn't unplug the cool box. Next morning, even the dashboard lights wouldn't come on anymore.... it had sucked the battery completely empty! In the end it needed the Swiss AA to bring it back to life as only petrol cars were available with jump leads which didn't give enough power to make the starter motor go round.... After a 2 hour delay (first tried to arrange the help via the AA call centre in the UK and they proofed to be utterly useless i'm afraid; cancelled the subscription forthwith...) we were on our way again and it never missed a beat after this little upset.

Cool box wasn't a genuine VW part though.

In my previous 2 Sharan's, however, the power to the 12V would switch off after around 20 minutes. Found that out when they installed the alarm system via the same fuse and the tamper alarm would set off the alarm after 20 minutes; that took the alarm guys about a month and a phone call to VW to find that out.

Hence always assumed the Gal had the same system but had to find out the hard way it hadn't. Since then we always unplug the cool box.

I have the genuine Ford fridge. Bought it for my Galaxy, now use it in my Alhambra.

It has a block in the lead with a green LED on it to show it has power. The LED goes off and it cuts power when the voltage drops. It will run for 1/2 day before cutting out. Always been able to start the car (my battery is now over 5 years old). To restart it you have to unplug it and plug it back in. It IS made by electrolux.

I've just used it extensively in France for the past 3 weeks.

(2700 miles, average 32.4 MPG) 2000 Miles at around 26MPG pulling a HEAVY caravan. Not a hitch - wonderful car :P .

A mate of mine has a pair of them under the bunk in his truck. The heat the one that is set as a freezer gives off is unreal! He says it settles down though once it gets right down in temperature.

He looked at LPG fridges but it was going to cause problems because of the hazardous goods he carries.
