ric220 Posted December 22, 2014 Report Posted December 22, 2014 Hi all. Just a quick question; My '99 sharan petrol (1.8t) has recently started hissing at me! It comes from the centre console and goes away when I accelerate. Fan hot / cold, on /off doesn't make a difference. Performance, braking and heating are normal. Any ideas? I'm about to do 700+ miles over Christmas so comments on how safe it is wd be particularly welcome. Thanks. Quote
mk2vr6 Posted December 22, 2014 Report Posted December 22, 2014 (edited) climate control or old school controls? if old school with the old rotary knobs with the recirc button in the fan speed knob then its possible the switch is  playing up or the connection leaking? the recirc switch flap is operated via the vacume off the engine, check the recirc flap/switch is working ok? if not? its not the end of the world and it can wait till the new year to get sortedhttp://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/OTAwWDE2MDA=/z/ls8AAOSw0vBUhN~Z/$_57.JPG Edited December 22, 2014 by mk2vr6 Quote
BrianH Posted December 22, 2014 Report Posted December 22, 2014 the ends of the vaccum hoses in the engine bay can and do split without a noticable effect on the braking assistance, its possible sometimes to hear this from the cabin. Its also possible to have a leak in the seal round the brake pedal where it moves the piston inside the servo (you can see this if you put your head in the footwell). If its definitely coming from the console i can only see it being whats highlighted above. Quote
ric220 Posted December 23, 2014 Author Report Posted December 23, 2014 Many thanks both for your excellent replies. I'll try to narrow down the source of the problem. Cheers Quote
