chromedome Posted September 1, 2014 Report Posted September 1, 2014 No fans continue to run on mine. Never have. Quote
csj Posted September 1, 2014 Author Report Posted September 1, 2014 Mines the same never ever heard the fan before really strange Quote
dipsomaniac Posted September 3, 2014 Report Posted September 3, 2014 don't know what engine the op has but my v6 temp gauge will go over the norm when in traffic, fans cut in to bring temp down to norm. this is when fans will run on for a min. or so when engine switched off Quote
csj Posted September 3, 2014 Author Report Posted September 3, 2014 The problem was or is that I've never heard the fan come on before especially after engine turned off , did it again today but car running sound so must be all ok fingers crossed :-) Quote
Russats Posted September 4, 2014 Report Posted September 4, 2014 I had an Alhambra, the fans on that used to carry on once you'd switched off if it has over heated (it had ongoing overheating issues) Quote
BrianH Posted September 5, 2014 Report Posted September 5, 2014 Might be an idea to check the coolant level as that may give you an earlier warning of a problem. It may just be that its getting hotter when you have stopped than it used to if you have changed anything - EG getting stuck in stationary traffic more than you used to. Quote
moog999 Posted September 6, 2014 Report Posted September 6, 2014 My previous 2.3 did this. It would keep the fans running and flatten the battery. I replaced the fan relay and that sorted it. Quote
csj Posted September 6, 2014 Author Report Posted September 6, 2014 My previous 2.3 did this. It would keep the fans running and flatten the battery. I replaced the fan relay and that sorted it. Will try that thank you Quote
dipsomaniac Posted September 10, 2014 Report Posted September 10, 2014 having read up some more on this it appears that it is normal for fans to run on for a short time in certain circumstances. my car has been doing it for the 11 years i have owned it Quote
Wesley Posted September 13, 2014 Report Posted September 13, 2014 I had this problem with mine. The is a air temp sensor located in the front bumper. When it is unplugged or faulty the car defaults into thinking it's too hot and the fan kicks in. My sensor appeared to be ok but when I disconnected it the wires going to it fell apart. They has corroded inside. Striped them back and put 2 small spade connectors and reconnected sensor and job done. Quote
csj Posted September 16, 2014 Author Report Posted September 16, 2014 Thanks for the reply , where abouts is the sensor please Quote
mikej Posted September 17, 2014 Report Posted September 17, 2014 Apologies if this is of no use to you but i have owned my current 2001 2.3 for the last 10 years and yes the fans started staying on last year as you described, drove me stupid for months trying to find the reason and i couldn't however it eventually cured it'self so since so left well alone??? (never done that before either) anyhow never heard about the air temp sensor but if it's the same one used for the air con which i would imagine it is? it's located in the front bumper. lay on you back with your head dead centre of the front bumper the sensor is clipped into rear of bumper within arms length on you left, it's only a small job that clips in if i remember right. Best of luck Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted September 26, 2014 Report Posted September 26, 2014 (edited) I had this on my MK1 and one other effect which I didn't tie together immediately was that in cold weather (-2 or worse) it took 5 seconds ish to fire up. To cut a long story short it turned out to be the coolant temperature sensor. It is in 2 parts. One seems to be used with the temp gauge to indicate the engine temperature and the other seems to be used by the ECU to control lots of other things to do with the engine performance etc. In my case the second of these had failed indicating that the engine was overheating. The temp gauge was showing normal. Replacement solved the starting problem and the fan overrun probably together with some other undetected side effects. This was a recognised problem with this engine and may possibly be the same with the 115 BHP unit as they are both VAG units. On mine the sensor was located above and in front of the engine in one of the coolant pipes and was a simple clip and pull out fixing (if the car is pointing uphill to stop the coolant pouring out) and cost about Edited September 26, 2014 by Scorpiorefugee Quote
