chunky62 Posted August 25, 2014 Report Posted August 25, 2014 Hi all, on a journey on the M25 car park i noticed that the temp was rising whilst sitting in traffic, as it got to the red the warning came on to stop so pulled onto hard shoulder, released bonnet and found fans not working. (never had this prob last time i got caught in traffic on M25) any ideas, also, will this be related to a common prob on these with the engine fuse box melting as starting to have different electrical probs. ie rear wiper now not working, parking sensors only giving one long audible bleep when first engaging reverse then nothing after, it seems that its electrical system is dying one by one. many thanks Dave Quote
alpickyuk Posted August 26, 2014 Report Posted August 26, 2014 Hi ,do the fans come on when you activate aircon.-Just a thought as this could give you cooling in the short term? Quote

The mk2 is prone to the fusebox meltdown i think the dash clocks usually don't light up properly if you have that problem. The rest of the issues i'd look at the boot gaiter though i doubt the fans are connected to the other faults. Quote
chunky62 Posted August 30, 2014 Author Report Posted August 30, 2014 Hi many thanks for your replies, I have today replaced the melted fuse box so hopefully that should be ok for a while. now here's the question. is there a fuse that runs the fans? i have looked at the fuse card under the dashboard and noticed a fan symbol in number 33 which in mine is missing. not being technically minded i'm not sure if this is for the heaters (which all work) or is the symbol for them the snowflake. if it is the missing fuse what size should it be. many thanks for ur help Dave Quote
SilverBeast Posted August 30, 2014 Report Posted August 30, 2014 I'm pretty sure the fuses for the cooling fans ( there can be one or two) are one/two fuseable links into the fusebox you have just replaced. Quote

If not theres a good chance you will be replacing it again. Theres info in the faq section on that. I wouldn't pay too much attention to what the symbols show on the plastic as its vague to say the least. If you look at the fuse contacts in 33 is anything in both sides of the contacts? if theres only 1 there it isn't connected to anything. There is a better version of the fusebox layout (scanned pages from the manual with the english descriptions of the circuits) on here somewhere, but I can't find the post with it currently. Quote
chunky62 Posted August 31, 2014 Author Report Posted August 31, 2014 Hi Brian and Silver beast, thanks for your replies. I think iv'e seen a link posted by silver regarding the fuse box but No I haven't replaced the wire or crimp, ( that will be next job asap i think) and Brian there is a fuse either side in 32 and 34, sorry if i'm being stupid and misunderstood your reply. give me plumbing any day of the week and i'm happy, give me car electrics and were talking a different language lol Quote
SilverBeast Posted August 31, 2014 Report Posted August 31, 2014 What I believe Brian meant was that in the fuse location with the fuse removed (or missing!) if you look at the sockets where the two "blades" of the fuse would plug in then you can see silver or gold contacts at both ends if there is supposed to be a fuse there. If they are missing (Usually only at one end) then it was unlikely that a fuse was ever fitted, or intended to be, in that location. If you can see contacts at both ends then it isn't definite a fuse was ever fitted but is more likely. Fitting a fuse of the correct rating in this case shouldn't do any harm. Quote

Yes exactly what i was trying to say!. Put simply the different versions have a common fusebox, but with different bits connected depended on whats fitted to the car. Quote
