Automatic Gearbox

hi all,im thinkin of trading my 2001 2.3 for a later tdi auto galaxy and i want to know wat sort of issues i should watch out for,iv heard all sorts of things about these and i just want to know for myself wat problems they come with????

From reading the Forums and owning mine (2005 TDI 130 Manual)

(i) Air Con - various issues

(ii) Run On pump at about 80k. Brushes wear out and can be replaced relatively easily.

(iii) Booster Heater glow plug (earlier MKII's) controller (late MKII's)

(iv) Door and Hatch Gaitor Wiring with all sorts of weird symptoms

(v) Rear wash wipe (simple fix if not left too long)

(vi) Front wiper mechanism seizing (can be fixed relatively easily if it's not been left too long) 

 

If you've had yours any length of time you probably experienced most issues anyway.  I'm not aware of any particular issues because it's a diesel. Don't know about the auto box

Hi just been through the same dilemma,   had a mk1 tdi for 10 years    time for a change,  did some research ,  seemed to be early   and high mile cars 2000 up to 02/03 that had some problems with some parts inside that were modified for later models,  thats purely what i read on a website,  not my own knowledge, i went ahead and bought a 54 reg v6 with auto box  i tested it as best i could and found it perfect smooth through gears and no noises,   you can always put it on vagcom and query the gearbox controller for faults. this one has 72000 miles on and I'm hoping it goes for many years !!! 

from what i read,  the faults seem to start with clunky changes from 2nd to 3rd  or 3rd to 4th gear  rather than a smooth affair.   i read also that   if you havent had trouble already  then you are more or less on borrowed time,  i chose to hope for the best !

if you look at the other forum   fordmpv   theres a chap on there who seems to know a fair bit. same with any used car though  always a gamble,   as silver beast says   the other common problems can be sorted usually with not much hassle.

had 2 of these now,tdi alahambra and 2.3 galaxy,alhambra never really gave me no trouble till the head gasket went,me galaxy has had gearbox mounts,top mounts,arms,starter motor,fuse box,brakes,front shocks,also i changed to alhambra springs as i found them to give a firmer ride!!!

 

yh its the tiptronic box i want to knw about,the wife just passed her test and now she wants an auto so looks like im changin it,as far as im aware as long as theve been looked after there fine,check fluid changes and gearbox services etc,
