Could be a faulty pressure switch. It shuts the system down if the gas pressure is too high or too low. Was it pressured as having dual air con? Looking at the age of your car it would be unlikely to have dual air con, look for vents in the roof above the middle and rear seats. If the wrong amount of gas was put in the system would probably shut down.

according to the display it has dual aircon but mine is an early mk2 w/o roof vents,iv had it working today nut abit of a mystery as to y,seems to only work for a short period of time,i can here the pump kicking in and out so it works for say 2-3 minutes, then cuts off for a few and then back on again, also i hav noticed that the engine fusebox the alternator terminal is way too hot to the point that its melted the suuround on the fusebox,im wondering if this could be at fault as iv heard they a common problem, other than tht im at a loss??????

It's the same display whether or not you have dual or single air con. If it keeps switching on/off it could be over gassed and the pressure switch is kicking in.

Like you say the electrical connection at the fuse box under the bonnet is a known problem due normally to a badly crimped connector. I would sort this problem first because it has been known to cause all sorts of weird problems.

Had mine re-gassed today, first time in nine years. The guy was amazed but when I told him I left in on all the time he understood why it lasted so long. It keeps everything lubricated and stops it drying out from lack of use.

No. I'm happy with what my Galaxy gives me. You could sit in a room with no windows or access to the outside world except for this forum and you could tell whether it's Summer (air con posts) or Winter (aux heater posts).

update......fitted a new aux fuse box and seems everythin is workin now, aircon works then goes off then will click back in again randomly, however the feed for the alternator from said fuse box is gettin hot,so hot you cant touch it,should this be normal?????

No. Did you replace the cable between the alternator and the fuse box? The fuse box gets damaged because the connectors crimped to the cable aren't done very well. This eventually causes high resistance and the overheating. If you haven't sorted out the cable your fuse box will just melt again. You need to solder the connectors to the cable.

thanks mate,on mine according to the manual the second wire is the alternator, but using that guide i know wat i need to do

The fuse links have their rating marked on the top. The biggest rated (150Amp in my case) is to the alternator (top on the diesel). On mine the second one down does to the fusebox in the passenger compartment. Any of the cables can be prone to this issue but these too are most susceptible as they carry the most current and will therefore generate the most heat in a faulty crimp.

yh my mistake,it was the link to the main fuse box that was getting hot,as i work for a electrical wholesaler we keep all the terminals on the shelf, ive put a new 1 on this morning with some heat shrink and it seems to have done the job, might do the alternator feed to be on the safe side!!!

on a different note would you be able to recommend a decent fault code diagnostic/reader as there seems a few for sale on ebay and i dont know wether to buy the software for my laptop or a reader????

thanks

I use the free VCDS-LITE software from Ross-Tech (It replaced VAG-COM) which you may see.

NOTE.  This should do everything APART FROM YOUR ENGINE MANAGEMENT as all the other bits are VW.  The diesels and V6 are also VW.  Only the 2.0 and 2.3 petrol engines are ford.

I've got one of these  from ebay. Use the drivers that come with it - make sure your Operating System is supported (it says Win 95 - Win 7 doesn't mention Win 8/8.1). Downloads for the software are contained in the listing - you need the free VCDS-LITE.  You have to scan the modules manually as auto scan is only available in the paid for version.  It should cover Air Con, Parking sensors etc

Can't recommend anything for the engine as mine's a diesel.  I'm sure someone will be along soon who can, though you may be better searching the forum or starting another thread as it's getting a bit Off Topic.

Hi I'm not sure if this is relevant to anyone else  but my aircon is working again after a few weeks of meddling and about 250 quid in parts.I got a great firm in middlesex to remanufacture my pipes with rubber hoses as I didnt want to replace with the silly ally pipes which had corroded.I live in the Highlands ( which has been quite hot lately-before anyone laughs) and the environment is harsh for a Galaxy . Anyway, after replacing the receiver/drier and switch which was totally corroded ( ebay both
