Guest Danny1960 Posted July 14, 2004 Report Posted July 14, 2004 Just acquired a 1996 2.0i Gal with 122k showing and a full S/H. Took her on a 160 mile round trip which she performed superbly, got back home and she promptly cut out! Restarted OK but since has a tendency to NEARLY stall one or two times when cold and tickover is approx 1100 rpm sometimes when warm. I suspect the IAC but can anyone show me exactly where it is please? Also, engine runs extremely cold and barely shows on the temp gauge but does warm up when sitting in traffic and seems to run better when up to proper temp too - could this be related? Can anyone show me where the thermostat is please? Thanks Quote
Guest Andy Posted July 14, 2004 Report Posted July 14, 2004 standard cool running mine is the same,in your fuse box check relay 30 for any dry joints this can make vehicle cut out and run funny, thermostat on right hand side of engine under coil pack, follow top hose to three silly torx headed bolts. <_< :( :( :( Quote
Guest Danny1960 Posted July 15, 2004 Report Posted July 15, 2004 thanks for that! Can I take it from your reply that running cool is a standard problem then? Does that also mean fitting a new thermostat will not cure it?Thinking about it, performance seems a bit flat too - hills really kill it - any ideas please? Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted July 16, 2004 Report Posted July 16, 2004 Try changing the coolant temperature sensors - could be that Engine ECU thinks car is hot when it's cold so leans the mixture off, or vice-versa. Have you taken the plugs out to look at them? This could give you a clue. Quote
Guest Andy Posted July 22, 2004 Report Posted July 22, 2004 i did put in a new thermostat in mine which made no difference,as for performance its not worth thrashing these about they do run a bit flat(ish) until you find the peak of the cams coming in then you can feel a little power.after speaking to several people they said their 2.0ltr ran the same as well.... :D :D :D  Quote
Guest Danny1960 Posted July 24, 2004 Report Posted July 24, 2004 We did have a problem with it whistling (loud enough to make peoples heads turn!) but this and the idling problem appears to have stopped now (touch wood). Other than it feeling flat, I am very pleased with it. I sold a Discovery to buy the Gal and she is soooooo much quiter than the Disco...........Now the kids are talking of privacy glass and in-car DVD's - anybody care to comment on the use of a PS2 and where to get a decent screen/12v adaptor please? Thanks for the info guys, this is a great site and I am going to recommend it to my colleagues and friends Quote

Guest Eric Simpson Posted July 26, 2004 Report Posted July 26, 2004 I am a newbie and saw this thread. I have a 2.0 '96ish. My is very sluggish but seems to have gotten worse lately. Also have a problem with hoses coming off the exhaust manifold ... one split after I clamped it on. What about the fuel pump on these puppies? Other possibilities? Eric Quote
