Tdi Oil Change

Hi

I would like to change the oil in my seat Alhambra TDI PD 2002 model.

I have bought the correct pd oil and filter.

Yet to look for the sump plug.

Believe the filter is under the top cover in a drop in tube.

 

A potted summary of where to go and pitfalls would be appreciated

 

My local garage suggested using a wurth flush as well. Any thoughts?

Whats this obsession garages have got with flushing?

 

Flushing an engine can potentially cause much damage.

 

The sump plug is under the engine <_<

 

To get to it you have to remove the engine undertray :(

I took the plunge and gave mine an oil change this week. It's normally done as part of the leasing deal but I plan to buy it in 6 months time and want 5,000 mile oil changes (especially as I'm towing the caravan to the south of France next week).

 

Remove the engine cover underneath the vehicle (6 x 10mm nuts/bolts) locate sump plug - it's very obvious and points towards the back of the car.

 

For the oil filter, remove the top engine cover - it pulls off with no nuts or bolts. Oil filter is in front on the nearside. Mine was too tight to undo so had to leave it. I think there's a special tool needed. It has a large black domed cover/nut? that needs to unscrew to remove the filter. I'd love to know any tips on getting it off.

Keith, did you try the old Leather belt wrapped around the filter ? This gives grip and should come undone, same as buying purpose made units from motor factors.

Andyjflet, the PD engines use a replaceable paper cartridge in a housing not the old metal can screw on. From what I read, it is important the screw cap should not be overtightened. Doesn't it have a large hex on the top that you can use pipe pliers on?

 

Keith did you slide the undertray out, and if you did, did you do it without lifting the car?

According to SEAT Customer Services, the majority of the time taken to service the car is removing and replacing the underbody tray, hence why they carge

I tried some strong cord in the style of a 'spanish windlass' if that's the right term, but there's not much room as seatkid says it's only the top part that removes.

I made a ramp from thick boards which raised the front end by about 6 inches. That allowed me to crawl underneath and get to the undertray. Yes, it slid backwards easily. Took about 10 minutes! My normal car ramps were too narrow for the Galaxy tyres.

Successful mission on oil change

for future ref of others.

Went on the ramps which was a lot easier.

Removed 6 bolts to drop tray and oil plug at engine rear bottom

filter on top was hard to undo but garage used giant plumbing pliers. I have a small strap wrench with a rubber strap which would be ideal.

changed the filter plus two oil seals included.

filled with pd oil about 4.0 l ran engine for a few secs to ensure filter was filled and topped up to total about 4.5 l max and that was that.

I had mine serviced at a franchised SEAT main dealer last week.

 

For that I get the assurance that the technician (they don't have mechanics at main dealers) has been highly trained :lol: as they have lots of certificates up on the wall to prove it. They also ensure that my screen wash is re-filled :) and that all my lights are working correctly :) and my hinges are lubricated :) - they even check my wipers! :ph34r: :) I think it's a bargain for

dealer told me i only need proof of service for warranty ,so you can take it anywhere,perhaps thats why i got 2 years free service,cos it costs them hardly anything to do it

Ref insurance's / warrenties you only have to use a registered VAT garage for the warrenty to be valid, check the small print or ring the insurers for confermation and the local garages are considerbly cheaper.

I changed my oil on mine with ramps (cos it tips back and you get more of the dirty oil out)in about threequarters of an hour, and I did not get my paws dirty, I know which oil went in and that the filter was changed also the correct amount of oil put in see an earlier thread.
