My aircon stopped working so I did the obvious and had the gas checked at a local service centre. I was told that the pressure was fine but that I needed to replace the compressor at an eye-watering price. All of the posts I have read here seem to do with loss of pressure unless I have missed something. Any suggestions?

If the compressor has seized then even with gas in the system, it won't work so they may not be lying to you. Firstly you need to check if the compressor clutch is switching the compressor in, if you can locate the compressor on the front of the engine (near the bottom I believe) you'll see the pulley has a circular plate on the side which is able to rotate separately to the main pulley which is driven from the alternator belt, when the compressor is not running this plate will remain static (the engine must be running for you to see this) whilst the pulley spins, then when the aircon is switched on the clutch should engage (click in- it's electromagnetic), when this happens the plate on the side should rotate with the main pulley. First thing to do is make sure this is happening when you switch the air con on.

Usually if it's not engaging it's due to low gas in the system. If you say the gas has been checked and the quantity/ pressure in the system is ok then that's not the cause, so you're either looking at a dodgy compressor or controls, or a wiring/ pressure sensor fault. With the engine OFF, can you rotate the end plate of the magnetic clutch on the compressor pulley by hand? (the plate that sits on the outside of the main grooved pulley where the belt sits, it's usually slightly smaller than the main pulley in diameter with 3 flat round 'heads'). It should rotate with some resistance, if you can't turn it at all then the compressor is likely seized.

Probably best to scan for faults with VAG-COM/VCDS. It may be pursue sensor or wiring to it. Of its on the same page as the diesel is being bumper and in front of drivers front wheel. East to get at if you remove the front bumper cover.
