Towed my Eccles Amathyst to France for the first time (Paris to be exact).

I own a 2.3 Zetec petrol, Galaxy. I averaged 22 miles/gallon. Has anyone got any views on towing in general with their Galaxys?

WOW 22 mpg!

I got about 16mpg with my 2.3 auto last year going to the med. That was 5 up with loads of baggage though.

I've now got a 115bhp diesel auto and last week got 26mpg going and 24mpg coming back on a 200 mile round trip.

I think the galaxy's a great towcar, pulls easily and not buffeted by side winds. Also no need for extension door mirrors due to it's width.

My next towing trip isn't until July when we are going to Annecy in the French alps.

I don't like auto's anymore, due to a bad experience with my last Espace!!!!!

Probably the aerodynamics comes into play. The caravan has an overall weight of 1050 kg, 200kg for bedding, food, bikes, etc.

Found the stability good (use a snakemaster!!) only waves occured when lorries overtook. Apart from that I did'nt notice the van behind me.

The torque on the 2.3 maxed around late 2000 rpm, which was cool, as the gearing on the manual was just right and not too high / low. found I was in 5th most of the time, though the terrain is fairly flat!!

Your right about the side mirrors, better than the clip-on variety that wobble everywhere!!!(like in an earthquake movie!).

Off to the west coast of France in Aug (bar the SARS virus!) know any good haunts?

hi, i have a 1.9tdi 110bhp which i use for towing my elldis hurricane (1100cwt) for use on A roads and at speeds under 50mph its fine' mpg is excellent but!

when i take my outfit on to motorways thats when the problems start.

when attempting to overtake lorries (between 50 -56 mph) i need to ensure that there is a good stretch of level road without any inclines, 'cos i low power in the 2500-3000 rpm band. this causes a few headaches when i'm 3 quaters of the way past a lorry and a hill appears.

has anybody else had the same problem?

other than that a good vechile ;)

I am towing a 19ft lunar 1300kg with both my Galaxy 2.3 at 22mpg and my mondeo 1.8td at 25mpg both sitting at 60mph. I find that the galaxy is the better of the two due to the weight of the car however being petrol not as forgiving when traffic speed are changing rapidly, it needs a little bit of gear changing between 4th and 5th however overall it is the better of the two. I agree about the mirrors and that the size and width if them for towing is great, however I believe it is a legal requirement to have a towing mirror fitted to the passenger side mirror? ;)

I tow with a 96 TDi 66KW and have a Elldis Avante 524 caravan. I find towing is no problem. Not suffered the same thing when overtaking on motorways. Fuel consumption id good to around 36 to the gallon of diesel.

I have towed with many different vehicles (except a 4x4, can'y afford one) and galaxy is the best tower so far. Would think the 81KW TDi is better though.

Will tow from Preston to the IOW this year.

I have the tdi 110,but have had it chipped because it lacked power on the m/way on the long climbs and overtaking. But other than this it`s a great tow car with plenty of room and good kerb weight.I tow a Avondale dart 1200KG,i would recommond having the chip fitted as it makes a lot of differance

hello all,

I reported power problems when towing and on inclines....sussed the problem.

After a bit of poking around the engine found that the plastic pipes from servo unit to pump at front of engine all had cracked ends where they connect and was therefore losing turbo(none at all) power due to lack of vacuum, also was losing braking performance

all ok now, can now tackle the 450 mile round trip to plymouth(tomorrow) :D

thanks for all replies to initial problem.
