mrben Posted April 26, 2014 Report Posted April 26, 2014 Hello all. 99 diesel mk1, my engine has started ticking on tickover. I can rev out of it when its just past 2000 rpm. I think it might be the lifters, are they hydraulic?? Shame, cause I change the oil twice a year, and it doesnt lose a drop, so will be cheesed off if top end is starting to go...do injectors make a tapping noise when they are on there way out? Thanks. marinabrid Posted April 28, 2014 Report Posted April 28, 2014 our 98 tdi AFN engine has ticked as you describe for the last 8 years, never seems to cause a problem with oil use or anything done 152,000 miles now. Quote
mrben Posted April 28, 2014 Author Report Posted April 28, 2014 ok thanks for reply. Does your one rev-out of the ticking? Thanks. Quote
marinabrid Posted April 29, 2014 Report Posted April 29, 2014 (edited) i think the ticking just gets faster the more you rev it but its hard to tell as the engine noise gets louder , like you i always do regular oil change and keep it in tip top shape, think it must be age/wear related but it don't seem to cause trouble of any kind, I'm sure there must be other high milers out there with something to say ? mrben Posted April 30, 2014 Author Report Posted April 30, 2014 Ok, thanks. Yes I thought there might have been a way of removing top/cam cover and somehow servicing the lifters. A squirt of teflon or something...but I think its a case of a new set, which is timing belt off etc, so unlikely to happen :) Quote
