TeamGreen Posted April 13, 2014 Report Posted April 13, 2014 Hi everyone, well winters just about done now and I've been warm and toastie all winter long. My car is a 2008 Sharan thats done 60k and I was wondering at what sort of age / mileage the glow plug starts to get fouled up, my commute is 14 miles each way so the heater is always good and hot but I'd rather prempt any probs during the summer rather than wait till the snows on the ground and so possibly change it now. Thanks. Quote
gregers Posted April 13, 2014 Report Posted April 13, 2014 0-to infinity. :48:some peeps have been very luckey and have never had any problems at all, others have had nothing but trouble with theres. Quote
TeamGreen Posted April 16, 2014 Author Report Posted April 16, 2014 Well knowing how lucky I am with the Lottery, not, then I think I'll change the glow plug etc and hope. Cheers. Quote
SilverBeast Posted April 19, 2014 Report Posted April 19, 2014 Check the model of the Aux Heater first. The later Galaxy's (and presumably the Sharan's) had a D5Z-F which has a ceramic glow plug which I understand is more reliable. The controller isn't though but I personally believe (based on my owning a 2005 Galaxy TDI 130 and reading the Forums) that is mainly damaged by overheating when the Auxiliary Coolant/Over-run Pump brushes wearing out and no longer circulating the water through the rear heating circuit. Again from reading the Forums, this seems to happen around 80k miles as it is running all the time the ignition is on. Quote
t-aslam Posted November 20, 2014 Report Posted November 20, 2014 I have a 2005 tdi 115.Just changed the glow plug and cleared the fault using vag com. The outside temperature was 11 c however I was led to believe the aux heater should come on if car is cold (below 75c). Mine didn't turn on and the car had not been driven in two days. Quote
BrianH Posted November 20, 2014 Report Posted November 20, 2014 I think you will find its the air temp outside the car that matters if memory serves me correctly from reading here it has to be below 5 degress. Give it a try now its showing 3.4 here! Quote
gregers Posted November 20, 2014 Report Posted November 20, 2014 iirc its 5 degrees for the mk1 and 10 degrees for the mk2.but my old mk2 used to come on when it was about 12 degrees. Quote
t-aslam Posted November 21, 2014 Report Posted November 21, 2014 Ok tried it, was 5c outside but did not comeOn! Car has 243k on the clock. I bought it at 83k and don't remmeber It ever working. Quote
insanitybeard Posted November 21, 2014 Report Posted November 21, 2014 Have you checked to see if there are any fault codes stored? As Silverbeast said, on a 2005 reg yours has got a good chance of having a D5Z-F model booster heater which are prone to ECU failure, my '54 plate has this model and needs a replacement control unit. Quote
gregers Posted November 21, 2014 Report Posted November 21, 2014 also check that the run on pump is working as well. Quote
SilverBeast Posted November 21, 2014 Report Posted November 21, 2014 If you've done 160k in it and never replaced run on pump,or at least the pump brushes I would be very surprised if it was still working. They general consensus seems to be that they only seem to last about 80k Quote
t-aslam Posted November 22, 2014 Report Posted November 22, 2014 Hi I replaced the run on pump about 20k miles ago. That works in fact I hear it humming in the background when I switch the car off. I keep getting this fault code even after clearing several times: 01491 glow plug for heater (q9) 29-00 short to ground. My mechanic replaced it as I my driveway is was blocked by sewage works. Quote
insanitybeard Posted November 23, 2014 Report Posted November 23, 2014 Yep, I had two fault codes on mine, as you- glow plug short to ground and also glow plug open circuit. If you've got a Z-F model heater then I'm 'fraid it sounds like your ECU has packed up to me..... Last winter my booster operated on perhaps 2 or 3 occasions, and that was it. When it did run, it was fine- no smoke or anything, so for me that as good as confirmed that my ECU had had it. Quote
Russats Posted November 23, 2014 Report Posted November 23, 2014 Not all Galaxy's have Aux Heaters right?? I've got a rear heater but that's it? I think lol Quote
Russats Posted November 23, 2014 Report Posted November 23, 2014 I've now rear other threads on Aux Heaters and from what I can make out that there isn't much heat going spare on the TDi and therefore you have the booster heater. It's not been below 10 degrees around here yet so I'm not entirely sure if mine works. I've not heard the noise or seen any additional smoke so far?Probably faulty, I've only owned the car since early summer. Quote
gregers Posted November 23, 2014 Report Posted November 23, 2014 have a read up on here, you can bridge the sensor iirc under the windscreen wiper area,to get it to turn on regardless of the temprature. Quote
Howz Posted December 3, 2014 Report Posted December 3, 2014 I have a similar problem, not owned my 2005 (148,000 miles) mk2 long, it's a 1.9tdi. I have just been outside to try it (1.5 deg) started her up and cracked open the fan to full and hot. Had a look and feel off the little exhaust and there is no heat whatsoever, also no noise either when the engine is running or when I turn it off. What is the best place to start with fault finding? Thanks Quote
BrianH Posted December 3, 2014 Report Posted December 3, 2014 (edited) That suggests to me that the run on pump needs attention (possibly brushes, maybe more) following that I'd recommend you get hold of a vcds lead and scan and see what errors come up (cheaper and more effective than guessing at stuff and needed to reset some faults anyway once youve fixed them). BrianH Posted December 3, 2014 Report Posted December 3, 2014 have a look athttp://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.php?/topic/7510-diesel-run-on-water-pump/&do=findComment&comment=54739andhttp://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.php?/topic/11814-run-on-pump/&do=findComment&comment=97935 Quote
gregers Posted December 3, 2014 Report Posted December 3, 2014 well 1st off,i would read war and peace, sorry the long thread in the faqs about the booster heater.just so you know how it is meant to work, then get the fault codes read, that will piont you in the right direction on where the actuall fault lays. Quote
Howz Posted December 4, 2014 Report Posted December 4, 2014 Thanks guys, really helpful as per usual. I did fit a new ABS sensor last week and when I took the car to the garage one of the faults that came up was ' fuel fired heater' so I presume that is the aux heater? A few pumps listed on eBay including a new Bosch one for Quote
insanitybeard Posted December 4, 2014 Report Posted December 4, 2014 (edited) Be careful if you buy a Bosch one (secondary water pump) from the 'bay, I nearly got caught out by somebody selling Bosch pumps with square connectors for earlier models, make sure the one you buy has the same part number as your old one- most of the Mk2's have a pump with a rounded connector and the part number 392 020 073, I got a pukka Bosch one from the USA as even with the import charges it only cost me about 70 quid including postage- checking now there's one here in Germany (for example) so you won't even have import charges to worry about, you may be able to get 'em for similar money in the UK from a Bosch agent but I wouldn't know where to look. gregers Posted December 4, 2014 Report Posted December 4, 2014 or look in the faqs and you will find VERY detailed instructions on mending the 1 you have. Quote
Howz Posted December 5, 2014 Report Posted December 5, 2014 Thanks really good info', I think I may have a go at replacing the bushes this weekend.......just need to find some??? Maybe time to rip open a few power tools to see if anything will fit, as no chance of finding any this weekend :( Quote
