Lost 1st and 2nd gear today on my Mk2 galaxy. All other gears are fine inc reverse. No nasty noises when they disappeared, got the car home ok, any one else had this problem or could point me in the right direction for a fix. You can select the missing gears just nothing there when you lift the clutch

Thanks Bill

Common problem.  Probably one of the selector cables on the top of the gearbox has come off, or mechanism in  same place is full of crud. Search the FAQ's on this Forum or look at this thread.  I'm sure there is a thread on one of these two sites that has pictures.

Thanks for the replys checked the cables and the are all connected with the assembly they connect to moving freely, looks like the problem is a little deeper. I will update once the garage has had a look

update, spoke to the local gear box experts, and it seems to be a common problem, the selector (inside the gear box) is made up of two different metals which come apart, (garage wants

That's a bummer, sounds like the selector fork itself for 1st/2nd gear has come adrift from the selector shaft or something like that, which will require the gearbox to be removed from the vehicle and stripped to access/replace, hence the cost. Sometimes the forks are secured to their shafts by means of a roll pin or the like, and if these let go the fork is free to move on the shaft when it needs to be fixed rigidly.
