Bill Button Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 Lost 1st and 2nd gear today on my Mk2 galaxy. All other gears are fine inc reverse. No nasty noises when they disappeared, got the car home ok, any one else had this problem or could point me in the right direction for a fix. You can select the missing gears just nothing there when you lift the clutch Thanks Bill Quote
chromedome Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 Check that the gear selector cables have not popped off. I believe they are mentioned in the FAQs. Quote
SilverBeast Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 Common problem. Probably one of the selector cables on the top of the gearbox has come off, or mechanism in same place is full of crud. Search the FAQ's on this Forum or look at this thread. I'm sure there is a thread on one of these two sites that has pictures. Quote
Bill Button Posted February 23, 2014 Author Report Posted February 23, 2014 Thanks for the replys checked the cables and the are all connected with the assembly they connect to moving freely, looks like the problem is a little deeper. I will update once the garage has had a look Quote
Bill Button Posted February 24, 2014 Author Report Posted February 24, 2014 update, spoke to the local gear box experts, and it seems to be a common problem, the selector (inside the gear box) is made up of two different metals which come apart, (garage wants Quote
insanitybeard Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 That's a bummer, sounds like the selector fork itself for 1st/2nd gear has come adrift from the selector shaft or something like that, which will require the gearbox to be removed from the vehicle and stripped to access/replace, hence the cost. Sometimes the forks are secured to their shafts by means of a roll pin or the like, and if these let go the fork is free to move on the shaft when it needs to be fixed rigidly. Quote
Bill Button Posted March 3, 2014 Author Report Posted March 3, 2014 well its getting worse, garage has the car and advise, drive shaft and stub shaft need replacing (these are welded together or something on a previous repair) the bill has gone up to 965 + the VAT im thinking its time to bale out an cut my losses, Quote
