Guest Gary Posted July 10, 2004 Report Posted July 10, 2004 Has anyone had this problem - suddenly my drivers side widscreen wiper stopped moving. The passenger one is still OK. I checked at home and the wiper arm has come away from the main linkage rail. There is a ball-and-socket joint which has popped open. I squeezed it back, but it came out again when I tried the wipers. This is annoying in the rain! Has anyone got a remedy? My local Ford dealer said on the phone that it would need a complete new wiper linkage set at some ridiculous price, plus VAT, plus labour charge etc etc... I can't afford a new wiper linkage. Has anyone else had this problem, and what is the cure? Thanks Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted July 10, 2004 Report Posted July 10, 2004 I've had this problem on a previous car and the only really satisfactory solution is a new part. Anything from a scrapyard may have the same level of wear. ISTR someone suggesting a fix using the "instant metal" epoxy mixes, but the basic fault stems from a design problem whereby the weight of the wiper linkage mechanism is taken by the plastic part of the joint, which wears quite quickly as a result. Dave-G Posted July 11, 2004 Report Posted July 11, 2004 :o I used a laggy band for about 6 months  Quote
Guest JohnP Posted July 16, 2004 Report Posted July 16, 2004 There's some info in the Technical section on this problem - it appears to be quite common. Mine did it just a week ago - the day before the MOT. The correct solution is the repalcement part - my local dealer told me that he tried to get it and couldn't anywhere in England - it's now on back order. The strongest bodge must be the 'bolt through the back' solution but you need to be handy with taps and drills to do that. Interestingly, the dealer suggested 'packing the joint with grease, then filling the top up with Isopon'. He won't get the work...John Quote
Guest volvofh12 Posted March 27, 2005 Report Posted March 27, 2005 i used parts of linkage from a sharon seems to have cured it Quote
dfh101 Posted April 3, 2005 Report Posted April 3, 2005 Had a similar problem, the wipers stopped working alltogether, took it in to the dealers, linkages had seized alltogether and in the process had screwed the wiper motor : Quote
Guest Scott Posted April 4, 2005 Report Posted April 4, 2005 And it was almost certainly the problem I (and many others have experienced) which Ford quoted me Quote
shelbournes Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 unfortunatly they are right ...a new replacement is the only option as with the movement of the wiper the ball jointy thingy will come apart again ...this is general wearYou could try a scrap yard as they sometime havethe wiper mounts still connected to the car...obviously not usually the wiper arm Have a ring round the local scrappys before spendingthe money at Frauds ...sorry fordsregards shelbournes Quote

sixbouys Posted August 7, 2007 Report Posted August 7, 2007 I have found that Volkswagen have issued a recal for the 'wiper problem' on the Sharan. I have called Ford but they said that they do not know of a similar plan for the Galaxy. Does anyone else know anything about this Quote
paulmpaciorek Posted August 8, 2007 Report Posted August 8, 2007 Sixbouys. Where did you hear about the recall for the wipers ? Paul Quote
big_kev Posted August 9, 2007 Report Posted August 9, 2007 My drivers side ball joint went last week. Will be trying the economy repair ( laggy band ), let you know how I get on. Seems better than trying to get the bloody thing out, yes I have read M04's old post and know that a woman can do what I am afraid to (the shame ! ) but she has small girlie hands . Quote
snewland Posted August 14, 2007 Report Posted August 14, 2007 The wipers on my last galaxy stopped working during the winter as they froze to the windscreen then the nut unscrewed itself. This was resolved at the garage. Quote
ola Posted August 22, 2007 Report Posted August 22, 2007 My experience is that when the problem first occur, deal with it, immediately.I waited too long, and guess what happend? Yes both linkage and motor went... I had to strip the car to get access to the linkage, removed it and started to disassemble, clean and grease everything up again (see other threads, don Quote

Very expense, however, they were able to help me by drilling through and securing the joint. The wiper does nor wipe all the way into the corner as it did (which can be annoying), but it is all perfectly well. Hope this helps Quote
