Been having a few problems with the tailgate recently. Sometimes when closing the tailgate, it will catch and close properly first time. Other times it takes 10 or more attempts to close it properly. Often needing a heavy slam to make it catch and close.

I'm wondering if the door latch pin needs adjusting slightly to help the tailgate catch. But I can't see anyway to adjust it.

Anyone know if the latch pin can be adjusted and how?

Thanks

tailgate striker on boot floor, covered by the plastic trim that's easily pulled off without any tools.

Yeah that's the striker I meant. But my galaxy has a aluminium piece of trim on the tailgate which the striker pokes through. How does this piece of trim come off? Seems well and truly stuck in place.

I had a similar issue with my Mk.1. I greased the catch slightly as I noticed water built up in the boot catch area when the boot was closed, leading to corrosion etc and evidently the sticking problem. The greasing seemed to do the trick.

Ok. Problem has now got worse. Boot rarely closes now. I've moved the striker around but it hasn't helped.

When you close the boot it's like the latch doesn't close around the striker pin. So the boot is just resting in place. Obviously it's not really driveable like this and not secure.

Messing with the central locking doesn't seem to help. The catch seems to move freely enough when pressed with a screw driver. I've greased it all up. I'm wondering if a break in a wire in the tailgate loom would be a culprit but not sure how it would cause my problem.

Any help please cos my Mrs is now telling me just to get rid of the car!

adjust it so that the post moves towards the back bumper, so its nearer the tailgate.

also are there any paint marks from when it came out the factory, you know so that you can see where the securing bolts were before you started adjusting the striker ??

I've had it as far forward and as far backward as possible and several positions in between. Still does the fault.

I'm starting to lean towards an electrical problem with the catch. Gonna investigate the wiring and look for damaged wires.

Unplug the lock and see if it still does it (theres a connector on the lock mechanism itself), If it stops misbehaving then the gaiter up at the top of the boot would be where i'd start looking as they are known to cause problems.

welcome to the forum,

well 1st port of call is to check VERY CAREFULLY the wires in ALL door gaitors including the rear hatch for any broken or frayed wires,as this problem can cause the symptoms you are suffereing from.

do a search in the faqs found in the technical section of the forum for info on mending them correctley.

I had same problem, car started doing what it wanted to, opening windows and rear door not opening with central locking, as gregers recommends check all wiring inside rubber boots between doors and car body, they break/short n cause hell!
