My brother in law has a mk1 tdi. He lives a fair distance away so been trying to diagnose his problem over the phone.

Car was working fine up til one day last week when it wouldn't start. Wouldn't even attempt to turn over. He told me he had dropped his key and it had come apart. My response was that he'd probably lost the chip from the key and therefore the car was immobilised. Sure enough the chip was missing.

However, he has since found the chip.and refitted to the key. But the car still will not attempt to turn over.

So, anyone know what might be wrong?

Thanks

Nope. Battery fully charged mate.

He has dash lights on. But that's it. No cranking, no clicking like when battery is flat. Just nothing.

If it's the pats chip, would the car still crank but just not turn over?

You can crank engine over but she won't start without pats chip in key. Wife dropped my keys and never told me, chip fell out, can no start, call out AA!!! Never felt such a fool, found chip, put back in key, start straight away, key now superglued.

Check the voltage on the starter motor - there should be a permanent 12 volts  on the main (thick lead) and 12 volts on the thin cable on the solenoid when the key is moved to the crank position. If that is OK then the starter motor has expired. If no switched 12 volts then investigate ignition switch and wiring.
