Guest cozi35 Posted July 9, 2004 Report Posted July 9, 2004 Hi ALL, Can anyone help,my ford galaxy 1998 si model 2.3,has a wobble @ around 30/40 mph,it feels like its may be my disc's,but i replaced these nearly 2 years ago.20,000 miles.i ve checked and removed the brakes and the disc's.pads and the disc's seem all ok.any idea's thanks Quote
Denis Posted July 9, 2004 Report Posted July 9, 2004 Assuming you mean a wobble when braking then 2 Years/ 20,000 miles.... could be the disks again. My 2.3 Auto ate up two pairs of disks over three years! Quote
Guest cozi35 Posted July 9, 2004 Report Posted July 9, 2004 deniswhy dont there disc last longer that 20k it seem a very short period to last?do you know if it is diffcuit to fitted to disc myselfi'm quiet handy normally. Quote

Denis Posted July 9, 2004 Report Posted July 9, 2004 Looking at the state of my old disks which were heavily scored/ grooved, they seem to live a very hard life. But then how heavy is a Galaxy? 50% more than a standard car? Quote
MrT Posted July 10, 2004 Report Posted July 10, 2004 My 97 Galaxy 2.8 Auto went through two sets fo front discs due to the vibration. The garage at the time said this was common on the autos as drivers held the footbrake on when stopped in traffic to stop the car pulling forward. This apparently deformed the disks. Mind you, Ford shortly took away their dealership after this. Ever tried braking without the engine running? Gave me a surprise the first time. Quote

Guest Andyjflet Posted July 10, 2004 Report Posted July 10, 2004 Perrys in MK lost their Ford dealership a few years back, they opened up the next day as a Peugeot dealer, it was beacuse of poor management and complaints etc...alledgedley Quote
Guest Porker Posted July 10, 2004 Report Posted July 10, 2004 I used to get through a lot of discs on my old Sierra. They were vented and I was told that if they are hot when you stop, then the heat near the pads means that they cool at different rates and that leads to warping. Might be true but I used to replace them every couple of years along with the pads as I would get vibration under braking which gets worse. They are fairly cheap at a factors and also easy to change so I treated them as serviceable items. I assume the Galaxy is as easy as any other car I have done? Remove road wheel, unbolt and support caliper and remove disc, push pistons back to accomodate new disc and put back together. Quote
johnb80 Posted July 12, 2004 Report Posted July 12, 2004 The most important thing when fitting new discs is to check the runout of the new disc. Hold a pencil near the disc and spin the disc, move the pencil closer and it should touch all the way round eventually. If it touches in one area and not another then you have runout which will cause premature failure of the disc and vibration / wheel wobble when braking. This happens because of uneven wear taking place due to the runout (it also causes very rapid wear of pads, calipers and gives more pedal travel). The usual cause of runout is that the mating surface between the hub and the disk is not clean e.g. rust / brake dust etc. Clean the surface well with a wire brush in a drill (safety goggles and a mask please) followed by lightly cleaning with emery cloth. Guest Aedas Posted July 26, 2004 Report Posted July 26, 2004 Hi new to the forum. We have had our Galaxy 1.9TDi 1999 since March 2003. The dealer replaced both pads and discs when we bought the car. Since then we have had a further 3 sets of pads in 15,000 miles!! Fortunately all under warranty. The last time we yet again asked the dealer what the problem was. The dealer contacted Ford technical (if there is such a place) who then confirmed that it is a known problem on some Galaxy models and can not be corrected!!!? The only good news is that the garage will continue to replace pads and discs under warranty. Can anyone shed any more light on the possible problem? :( Quote
