Switch just above brake peddle needs looking into, bit of a devil getting out though, twist clockwise to remove, it will come apart to service otherwise a replacement is required, before fitting back pull plunger fully out.

Hi I'm having similar issue I have a 2.3 auto galaxy 02 plate brake lights not working with it being auto the car will not let me take it out of park. I changed the brake switch which was a pain thinking it might be that but no luck so had to get rac out they found fuse 15 had blow and keeps blowing fuse every time new fuse is put in. When break bulbs are taken out fuse don't blow and car will let me take it out of park. In the end rac changed bulbs and fuse and it worked, rac went then an hr later it blow fuse again. Will it be the tailgate loom if so is it a job for auto electrician ?.

Kind regards

Stuart

check for broken wires in the rear hatch loom, common problem.

info on joining new wires are found in the technical section of the forum.

Probably the brake switch. If you have cruise control and try using it you may find that an engine management warning light comes on. If so it's deffinately the brake light switch. They were a dodgy design across lots of VAG cars and a new design switch is now available. I had exactly the same problem in my galaxy and my old Audi.

Check you have got the right bulbs in the holders - if you have a single contact in the bottom of the holder then check it matches the bulb. I've checked my mk1 it has double contacts so should have double filament bulbs installed. I've seen people force the wrong bulb into the holder and cause problems like what you have described.

Hello thanks for all the info because of the info fixing the problem didn't cost me a penny. The problem was the tailgate wiring loom. Found 3 wires that over time lost the outer coating which was causing fuse to blow. Thanks for your help
