Earlier this year I changed the glow plugs as my tdi was a bit clattery upon start up and a bit smokey.

I got the glow plugd from eurocarparts so assumed they were the right ones for my engine. However upon fitting, I noticed the new plugs were about 10mm shorter than the old ones.

Now the cold weather is back, the engine is clattery and smokey upon first start up.

So my question is, would the glow plugs being too short have an impact on the starting. Should I be looking to replace them again?

If the distance from the tip to the seat is different then yes. The tip should sit in the combustion chamber in the spray path.

Wrong plugs.

Ok so I'm going to replace them asap. But now my faith in eurocarparts has been lost as they supplied me with these incorrect ones.

As ive not got the old ones to check, can anybody help me with sourcing the correct plugs for my 2002 tdi 115 auto (pd engine).

Either the correct part number or a link.

Thanks

I thought it might just be Europarts because I have had similar oddities with other bits and pieces where dimensions are impossibly diffferent.

I checked GSF for you  http://www.gsfcarparts.com/parts/service-parts/plugshttp://www.gsfcarparts.com/parts/service-parts/plugs

and the same variation of overall length occurs there too.

Its a bit puzzling - maybe someone here has an old plug handy?

Tend to think it's the longer one - 96mm overall- so long as it doesn't hit the piston should be fine

Yeah everywhere ive checked offers about 4 different plugs all for the auy engine. I dont wanna get too long and risk engine damage. Im stumped.

In essence, the only bit that matters is the length of the element below the thread  but unfortunately they don't all specify that dimension - overall length isn;t that important.

Bosch online catalog lists two variants for AUY engine

before 11/2001 part no 0 250 202 022

11/2001 onwards part no 0 250 202 023

This shows the two variants (three manufacturers) based on chassis no. the later variant is 5mm longer.

I tend to keep old parts to match up.

Forgive my dumbness, but if the overall length is shorter, won't this affect the busbar being able to sit correctly?

Yes, the correct glowplug is vital. They havent changed the physical design of the glow plugs.

Good news...

But shows the importance of checking against original items and not relying totally on Halfords/ECP/GSF catalogues.
