chrislloydie Posted November 20, 2013 Report Posted November 20, 2013 Earlier this year I changed the glow plugs as my tdi was a bit clattery upon start up and a bit smokey. I got the glow plugd from eurocarparts so assumed they were the right ones for my engine. However upon fitting, I noticed the new plugs were about 10mm shorter than the old ones. Now the cold weather is back, the engine is clattery and smokey upon first start up. So my question is, would the glow plugs being too short have an impact on the starting. Should I be looking to replace them again? Quote
seatkid Posted November 21, 2013 Report Posted November 21, 2013 (edited) If the distance from the tip to the seat is different then yes. The tip should sit in the combustion chamber in the spray path. Wrong plugs. Edited November 21, 2013 by seatkid Quote
chrislloydie Posted November 21, 2013 Author Report Posted November 21, 2013 Ok so I'm going to replace them asap. But now my faith in eurocarparts has been lost as they supplied me with these incorrect ones. As ive not got the old ones to check, can anybody help me with sourcing the correct plugs for my 2002 tdi 115 auto (pd engine). Either the correct part number or a link. Thanks Quote
chrislloydie Posted November 21, 2013 Author Report Posted November 21, 2013 Just looked at eurocarparts and they list 3 different lengths for my reg number. One is 58mm long, one is 90mm long and one is 97mm long. Quote
chrislloydie Posted November 21, 2013 Author Report Posted November 21, 2013 It seems I need 21mm fitting depth but these are only 58mm total length. That seems too short? Quote
acecard Posted November 21, 2013 Report Posted November 21, 2013 (edited) I thought it might just be Europarts because I have had similar oddities with other bits and pieces where dimensions are impossibly diffferent.I checked GSF for you http://www.gsfcarparts.com/parts/service-parts/plugshttp://www.gsfcarparts.com/parts/service-parts/plugsand the same variation of overall length occurs there too. Its a bit puzzling - maybe someone here has an old plug handy? Tend to think it's the longer one - 96mm overall- so long as it doesn't hit the piston should be fine  Edited November 21, 2013 by acecard Quote

I dont wanna get too long and risk engine damage. Im stumped. Quote
acecard Posted November 21, 2013 Report Posted November 21, 2013 In essence, the only bit that matters is the length of the element below the thread but unfortunately they don't all specify that dimension - overall length isn;t that important. Quote
seatkid Posted November 21, 2013 Report Posted November 21, 2013 (edited) Bosch online catalog lists two variants for AUY engine before 11/2001 part no 0 250 202 02211/2001 onwards part no 0 250 202 023 This shows the two variants (three manufacturers) based on chassis no. the later variant is 5mm longer. I tend to keep old parts to match up. Edited November 21, 2013 by seatkid Quote
seatkid Posted November 21, 2013 Report Posted November 21, 2013 Correction to previous post - the later variant has 5mm longer thread (I think) http://www.vwspares.co.uk/alhambra2_electrical.php for further info Quote

seatkid Posted November 22, 2013 Report Posted November 22, 2013 Yes, the correct glowplug is vital. They havent changed the physical design of the glow plugs. Quote
chrislloydie Posted November 22, 2013 Author Report Posted November 22, 2013 So.... can anyone tell me for definite, exactly which glow plugs I need for my tdi please? Quote
seatkid Posted November 22, 2013 Report Posted November 22, 2013 You'll have to give us your chassis no. :49: Quote

chrislloydie Posted November 22, 2013 Author Report Posted November 22, 2013 Assuming chassis number and vin number are the same thing? If so, mine doesnt seem to relate to any of the chassis numbers on the glow plugs. Quote

seatkid Posted December 7, 2013 Report Posted December 7, 2013 (edited) Good news... But shows the importance of checking against original items and not relying totally on Halfords/ECP/GSF catalogues. Edited December 7, 2013 by seatkid Quote
chrislloydie Posted December 7, 2013 Author Report Posted December 7, 2013 Exactly mate. Ill be a bit more cautious when ordering parts next time. Quote
